Yeah, how dare people who liked something you didn't like want a sequel to it. They shouldn't make a sequel!

It's absolute solid gold, isn't it?

I like to list mine as "complicated", but then I am a pretentious snob. Really, I'll fuck anyone.

Avatar was never that good to begin with. I don't understand why people keep settling for sub-par, childish storylines in their fantasy adventure shows but w/e. i started to watch korra and have enjoyed it so far, but I don't think it's the most amazing thing to show up on tv either.

The only way Starscream should be a woobie is that if he thought acting like one would make it easier to slide a knife into the woobifier's back (and even then, halfway though the woobie-ing he'd stop to brag and monologue about what a great woobie he makes, and how he can't believe the woobifier is falling for it). That's Starscream.

Wasn't there an episode of Beast Wars that had that for its intire plot? Starscream came back as a ghost just to fuck with a new megatron and prime.

But still not exactly American mainstream. ;)

(Anonymous) 2012-05-21 11:52 am (UTC)(link)
This is my problem too. I read YA and Runaways about two years ago and had no idea where to go after I finished. I've barely read anything Marvel related since then.

I completely agree with you about the weak character development OP. Now excuse me while I TL;DR vent about eps 5-7 which I just watched this weekend. Late to the party, I know. Spoiler warning.

I really want to stay excited about LoK but after the whole love-square thing I'm just kind of bleh. Here I was slightly excited for possible romances and now I completely dread it. So far there's just a whole lot of cringe-worthy character flaws centered around romance and not enough balance.

Ep 5 screwed with the groups dynamic. My boyfriend and I initially shipped Makorra until Korra and Mako showed they had absolutely no respect for relationship boundaries (and Asami). We also didn't like how Korra led Bolin on a date for the sole purpose of getting some confidence back (or at least that's how it ultimately seemed to turn out).

The makorra kiss...oh man. First Mako lies about being into Korra to Bolin and then he turns around and throws a hissy fit after the date. Not only is Korra a jerk for kissing Mako, Mako is an even bigger jerk for kissing her back. How is it ok to kiss and lead Korra on with "confused feelings" and then pretend like things are all hunky dory when seeing Asami again? Frankly, I can't shake the feeling that Mako sees Asami as a trophy girlfriend with lots benefits. Part of me is rooting for Masami to turn out much better endgame after some flaws are straightened out. Until Korra is knocked down a few pegs I will be shipping her with arrogance and Bolin with Pabu.

And about the other old love triangle...Pema/Tenzin/Lin. Wtf? Am I the only one who is turn off by how normal LoK tries to make it seem to betray someone emotionally (and romantically)? I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Pema mentions "watching my soul mate spend his whole life with the wrong woman became too painful so...I confessed" in an ep.5...How is someone your soul mate if you're not romantically involved with that person? Big IMO, I can't help but think that sounds awfully conceited and naive of Pema. Tenzin did decide who he ultimately wanted for himself so that's fine, but should Pema really be giving that kind of advice to Korra and her daughters? Just look at what Korra did with it afterwards >___< Meh idk. It just sounds so messy.

Again, damn you love triangles screwing with the characters I like. I know characters are more interesting and realistic when they're flawed, but I'd prefer if it didn't have anything to do with love triangles, jealousy, or random betrayals. Especially if they're being written in poorly. Hopefully they'll address those situations better in future episodes.

Ep 6 was awesome. Reason being Lin. I guess Korra was bamf too.

Ep 7. After ep 5's low and 6's high, this one turned out to be surprisingly okay. Korra's assumption about Asami wanting to go shopping and get makeovers...sigh. Mako assuming that Korra is accusing the Sato family of having ties with the equalists because shes jealous and then threatening to break their friendship because of it...siiiggggghhh. Whatever. At least Korra showed some maturity when she told Mako that he should be there for Asami. Damn was that refreshing for her character.

I'm thinking about revisiting this series in a year or so to see how it turns out. I don't think I have the patience to wait weekly/biweekly for new episodes because I tend to set certain expectations. Part of the reason why I can't get into ongoing long series. I did this for A:tla (which I loved) and skipped out on its fandom. I was tons glad I did.

[identity profile] rabidsamfan.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 11:54 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on the fic. Stories with multiple chapters -- especially long stories -- have a fair chance of having more alerts or favorites than reviews, but shorter pieces it's even odds until the fic has been up for a couple of years or more. Gradually the favorites start to outweigh the reviews over time.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-21 11:58 am (UTC)(link)
Man, ninety percent of those reviews or more are 'I leik this, maor pls?' If you go by review quality, Twilight comes in about average. Sometimes less than.

[identity profile] rabidsamfan.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's the problem I have with kudos. If I liked a fic and left a kudo, I'd like it to be on a list I can use to go back and find the fic.

And I'd adore hits to kudos/reviews ratios instead of raw numbers. One of my least read fics got a review for every two hits, which is fantastic, but you'd never even glance at it if you were only looking at the number of reviews.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-21 12:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, for my long fics I get more reviews than favourites because people are wonderful and review every chapter (and favourite and alert). On my oneshots, it varies between an even ratio and a very favourites (+ alerts) heavy ratio. Mostly the latter case though.

Personally, I moved on to Alias while waiting for my copy of Children's Crusade to be available for delivery. Alias is Jessica's first title. I'm not a huge fan of the art (though it did grow on me eventually), and it's part of Marvel's MAX series, meaning it is darker and grittier than YA (compare the first speech bubbles that show up: in YA Jonah is censored when he says 'hell', in Alias the first word uttered is 'fuck', no censor or anything.)

But that said, I loved the look into Jessica's mind and past, even if it was quite a shock to see how different and fucked up Jessica was in Alias as compared to YA. But also kind of reassuring, as I knew that no matter how much shit she would get thrown her way, she'd come out on top. :D

(Anonymous) 2012-05-21 12:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a creator (though not very prolific), I share my work, and I don't make much difference between specific feedback and kudos / like. Because I don't intend to make a job out of it, and I don't create specifically to please an audience. I do it because I like doing it, and if people enjoy the result, it's even better.

So if people liked my work enough to write a review pointing out something specific, I appreciate the time they spent to it.
But if they just like or favorite the work, I enjoy it too.
Maybe because as an audience, I don't always have a feeling about a fic or fan-art that goes past "I enjoyed that". It's not less of a comment for it.

I go there for the rides, not for the Disney theme.
I agree it costs an awful lot of money if you buy tickets at the door, though, which is why I only ever went there with reduced prices tickets bought online in advance, or other advantages like that.

What I was trying to say is that there are several non-anglophone countries where only home box office matters. Sequels will be made or not made based solely on that. International market isn't considered because 99% of the films produced don't have any chance whatsoever to make the international market.

As an example, I'm from a small country with a small film industry. There is one director who is actually relatively well-known worldwide and his films tend to be sold internationally. Other than that, there are about thirty films made each year. A few of them may make it to some international film festival or maybe be sold to one of our neighbouring countries, but this doesn't really affect their box office. These are obviously not 27 million dollar films, so they can usually make their budget in the domestic market. There was recently one new film by a young film maker that half-accidentally broke into a small international market (three other countries). This was considered to be an extraordinary success because our films are generally only ever shown domestically. Naturally our 'successful' films would never be considered to be successful by US standards (or by the standards of any other country with a large film industry), but saying that "international box office is a huge thing for almost any country" and decides whether a sequel will be produced or not is inaccurate, because there are plenty of countries where getting an international audience is considered an exceptional success, regardless of how great the international profits are.

(And in regards to the secret, as I said, I don't doubt that international box office isn't important for anglophone countries (and even some non-anglophone ones) and thus for this particular film, but it is not equally important worldwide.)

(Anonymous) 2012-05-21 12:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Australia is an anglophone country. I was referring to non-anglophone ones. And you are right that I wasn't making a distinction between a critical and a box office success, because international box office success is extremely unlikely for many non-anglophone countries, and thus it's domestic box office (financial) + international buzz (critical) that can decide whether a sequel is going to be made or not.

I'm not a big fan of Disney, though like much kids I saw some movies when I was younger. I was a bit judgemental of those parks before going, like OP, but once there (invited by a friend who had cheap tickets for Disneyland Paris), I actually enjoyed it a lot.

It's a safe, clean place to go. Which is a good thing when you want to take your mind off of daily chores and problems, and for a lot of people, that's the definition of holidays.
Now I went back a few more times, mostly for the rides and the shows, because they're great!

Apart from being a Disney-themed park, it's a fun park, and it's well done. Yeah there's queueing, but mostly they managed to organize queuing areas within places where you have stuff to watch, so you don't feel bored.
It's better if you can go off-peak, though (mid-week off season).

I agree it costs an awful lot of money if you buy tickets at the door, though, which is why I only ever went there with reduced prices tickets bought online in advance, or other advantages like that.
That puts the day ticket at less than 50 Euros/person, and we make the most of it, going there for the whole day and not paying anything else while in there, except a bit of food, since we don't have kids who would ask for a princess dress or whatever.
It's pricey but not more than a concert ticket. Something you don't do every week-end, but well worth the price for a day of fun.

Also it helps that I live in Paris anyway, so I don't have to add hotel costs to it, only the 2x9 Eur/ticket to go there by public transports.

I do have friends who have the yearly pass and go there at least 2 or 3 times a year, and also go to the Florida park whenever they can travel there. I think OP would hate them :P
But they have that nostalgia for Disney movies in addition to liking the attractions, so why would I begrudge them their fun?

I still have a fond feeling for some of the japanese cartoons I watched as a child, and would probably go spend a day at a theme-park of it if it existed...

I hate her as being the embodiment of a lot of things I hate in our society : glorifying superficiality, easy money, utter lack of class and thinking that being in a reality TV show is the greatest thing ever.
I feel the same towards other Jersey Shores people, but it's the one I hear about the most, since I don't follow the show and have no interest into places that would discuss it.

This being told, I don't hate her enough to actively do anything about it. F!S may well be the only place where I do so. But I do get why she would grate nerves, her and the mere fact that there's so much talk about people like that.

[identity profile] hiyami.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)
She went through a lot of facial plastic surgery, and from what I've seen of the results, it rather damaged her beauty than enhanced it. And her career suffered from it (and also from saying that Michael Bay was a bit of a dictator, I reckon...).

I didn't know she was supposed to be pregnant now, but I think OP means that having a child (and being perceived as having had a child) will also hinder her career because it relies a lot on her image.

[identity profile] ooh-mrdarcy.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I always thought it was more a case of getting crap past the radar than Tony and Cap not being into each other because of their gender. (I can totally believe they're both straight, but sometimes love sees no gender. And you can totally have a sexless marriage.)

(Anonymous) 2012-05-21 12:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I may be a raging prude and a Jesus-lovin' Christian, but I couldn't agree with you any more.

Lots of hate for the poor gal, and all because she ENJOYS sex, (while also being female! Which- as we all know- only MEN can enjoy sex and actively seek it, right??) isn't conventionally attractive, (both body and face) and she's a person of color. (wtf racism?)

Also ,I don't get why people DON'T find her attractive? She's not really fat, just short, (if she were taller, she'd probably be more thin) and even if she were fat, who cares? Plus I think her face is actually really pretty?? (I must look like a total dog! Glad I don't have a TV show, I could only imagine the haters I'd get)

(Anonymous) 2012-05-21 01:05 pm (UTC)(link)
sexist

(Anonymous) 2012-05-21 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Now this, I think is fair. When I start a fic, I feel like I've made an implicit promise to finish it -- as long as someone is actually reading it. If not, and I get distracted/get writer's block/whatever, then I assume no one cares, so why put in the extra effort?

People complain bitterly about authors 'holding stories hostage', but sometimes it's more 'put feedback in, get story out'.

I'm pesonally grateful for any kind of feedback, but I expect that actual reviews, especially detailed ones, get addictive quickly. (Insert bad review-withdrawal joke.)
