Only cousins. In 99% of the world it is legal and non-taboo. Seems to be only America that has that hang up.

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
No... they're twins, aren't they? That's how I recall it, in any case.

Also! HEY WHAT'S GOING ON I had to do it, okay.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-22 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
They are twins and you can marry your cousin in the US depending on how close the relation is. Fourth or third cousin, go for it, first cousin is a no go, there's just too many genes that are related.

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2012-05-23 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I... never said anything about cousins, though?

[identity profile] raichu100.livejournal.com 2012-05-23 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Actually in many states you can marry your first cousin.

[identity profile] barnabys-bane.livejournal.com 2012-05-23 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. The parents of a friend of mine in high school were first cousins. And they met at a family reunion of all places.

And he TRIES.

O MAI GAWD. DO. I. TRY.

[identity profile] insanenoodlyguy.livejournal.com 2012-05-23 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
I TRY ALL THE TIME. IN THIS INSTITUTION.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-22 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Which is weird because cousins are allowed to marry in the US, even in places where same-sex marriage is banned. Makes no sense.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-22 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
That's because it didn't used to be taboo in the US and most places never bothered to ban it because not enough people were doing it anyway.

Ah, math and taking the time to do a wikipedia search before displaying your ignorance - you're doing both wrong.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-22 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? cause that's totally taboo where I come from (and it's not America) The ironic thing is many regard over here that the US in some areas is cousin marriage friendly.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-22 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It's definitely taboo in my country, even though it's legal.

[identity profile] suspiriorum.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
That may be, but Adam and Adora are twins who were separated at birth.

[identity profile] anat-astarte.livejournal.com 2012-05-23 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, this. The Sorceress of Grayskull cast a spell over the land to make everyone forget that Adora was stolen by the Horde ( they were interrupted from taking Adam too) and the only people that retained the memory were the king, queen, Man-at-Arms, and the Sorceress.

(Is it obvious that I loved these series? XD)

Omg, I loved She-Ra and He-Man so much as a child. Though they're mostly remembered for their toylines (which were awesome, of course), their series had a lot of fantastic mythology, too.

[identity profile] unicornherds.livejournal.com 2012-05-23 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Omg the toys were amazing. We had both Castle Greyskull and She-Ra's castle (which kind of sucked since it was all about make up tables and fancy bedrooms, but the elevator was AWESOME). Loved those toys.

They were twins.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Ehm, no.

Firstly, you totally fail at percentages.

Secondly, It's pretty taboo in most of Europe too, as well as Australia and at least some of South America that I know of.

Not only is it taboo, but you couldn't legally marry your cousin in many countries (while ironically, in some U.S. states you can). Fun fact: a ban on marriage with close relatives originally stems from Roman law and persist in many countries that were once under Roman rule.

I would call that Christian Law more than Roman law, tbh. It was legal until the emperors started being Christians. Which is odd once you consider the marriages in the Bible, but whatever.

If you look at most of the incestuous marriages in the Bible that were written about in detail, most of them showed really messed up situations.

[personal profile] meadowphoenix 2012-05-23 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
The incest was only fucked up when it was about not having faith in God (see Tamar which wasn't technically even incest). Abraham and Sarah have a father in common and they're totally fine (that's why he told Pharaoh she was his sister, because he wasn't actually lying). See the entirety of Abraham's family. Incestuous. Nothing explains Adam's lineage from his kids or Noah's re-population of the earth, lbr. Then there's the pseudo-incest. If a brother died, the surviving brother would have to marry his widow. Jacob had sisters as wives. Ruth and Boaz were related through Naomi's spouse. There are specific provisions against certain types of incest, but everything else was fair game. Keeping it in the family was an important nomadic principal, actually, because property needed heirs.
