You're not obligated to approve of bad behaviour just because it's approved of by another culture. On the other hand, lots of people in those countries actually are decent people who understand human rights concepts, so you needn't assume that everyone in a country is a certain way.

Yeah it's pretty racist and condescending for OP to assume that while they are an individual who can see their own culture's problems, people from other countries are a monolith of sheep who can't be individuals and critical thinkers too.

This. I come from a pretty conservative place, but I'd like to think myself socially conscious and a lot of my friends/family are, too. For Op to take one look at us and assume we're bigoted is Not Cool.
