The romance aspect doesn't bother me too much because there are not a lot of interracial pairings on TV, so it'll be nice to see one, as long as it doesn't turn out offensive. If Watson were a white woman, I'd have more of an issue with it, since there are already a lot of crime shows like that. Her no longer being a veteran irks me as well, since there aren't a lot of female characters on TV who were/are in the Armed Forces, but I'm going to wait to see what they will do.

True, there's not a lot of interracial coupes on tv. But then, there's probably fewer gay couples, especially as the main characters. They could have had Watson be played by a male Asian (or Black, or Native American, etc) guy, and we could have had both.

And, yeah, there are very few military women on tv, except in shows about the military (like JAG or NCIS). Having a female character who just happens to be a veteran on a show that's not about the military is still pretty rare.

The amount of interracial couples and gay couples on American TV seems to have become near equal in the past three or so years. There is also Brittany and Santana on Glee, who are both, and I think there is also another lesbian interracial pairing on Grey's Anatomy (I don't watch it, so I'm not entirely sure). I don't think that even if Watson were male, they would have gone with the gay route, so it doesn't bother me. Maybe if het!Holmes/Watson in this show is successful, it will inspire someone to do a version with a gay Holmes and Watson.

I'm not saying they would have gone the gay route. What I'm saying is that they made Watson female so they could have the potential for romance.

I don't really have a problem with romance happening, as long as it is well-done. I'm happy to see some sort of Holmes/Watson romance in a major adaption, and that it will be interracial is pretty cool. If the show is actually well written, I'll be really excited. In a way, it is baby steps to getting a gay Holmes/Watson pairing in a well-known adaption.

I dunno. I'm hoping if the show, and the relationship, is well-written enough I'll like it, but I can't help but think that I'm going to be a bit resentful that THIS is what it takes for Holmes and Watson to finally be in a relationship...
