1. Obvious but worth mentioning: Taking your cues on issues of social justice from fandom is definitely not a good idea

2. I don't think there is a single country/culture in the world that is "open-minded" enough that this attitude is anything but cultural chauvinism, and probably racist. I could be wrong, but I'm Canadian, I've lived in "open minded" (LOL) Europe, and I've had some discussions with older Iranian women that have led me to seriously rethink my biases around this.

This. It borders on nationalistic to act as if your country is open-minded enough, because no countries are.

Not sure I'd say "nationalistic" is a bad word though? Identification with and loyalty to a national identity is different from being willfully ignorant about its flaws. "Jingoistic" maybe?

That's funny. Because I've had some discussions with English people talking how racist and horrible Americans are to American blacks and then they turn around and start talking about how those "Damn Pakis" are taking over their country.

This! Those discussions were more about sexism, but this was exactly my experience in germany. Though to be fair I also met many people who were smarter than this. The trick is to start seeing people instead of countries I guess...

Well I live in England and calling someone a Paki is considered ignorant and very racist. I think you are probably right about people in general, that we all need to be aware of our own racism, but it's not an English thing.
