Okay...
Firstly - You realize that populations are not monolithic entities, right? Someone from Iran might be pro-abortion or pro-gay marriage, for example, even if the country's laws would not reflect that.

Secondly - part of tolerance - the really challenging part - is learning to live with people who really hold opinions that are diametrically opposed to yours. That doesn't mean you have to agree, but it means you need to accept them as human beings WITH their differences. And you might try educating them if you think they're narrow-minded; but what they do with it is up to them.

I struggle with this with religious people. Some of it really rubs me the wrong way. But you know, most of them aren't fanatics - they're just people living fairly ordinary lives.

What a group of reasonable concepts!

Too bad most people are apparently above them.

Can't possibly solve problems with reason! Shouting is far more effective!

+1

I am amazed that so many people don't seem to understand this.

Most of my friends don't have the same religious or political views as I do. If I was forced to only befriend people who shared the exact same opinions as me... well, I don't think I'd have many friends.

Pretty much this. I have friends (dearest friends, my best friends) who disagree with me on several issues, from abortion to religion and politics. And we respect (not only tolerate) each other perfectly.
