But that does not devoid you of agency, any more then the OP. That's a cause, not an excuse to deflect blame. Which, to be fair, is not what I think your doing. But it's an easy trap that must be avoided.

That is...not entirely true. Kids who have heard years of racist and/or homophobic remarks are very likely to adopt those views/behaviours - at least temporarily. Fortunately, many change their minds once they are out there in the real world, and become "recovering racists". But some of these views can stick in insidious ways, and might never go away entirely.
