I can't help but feel it is, to some degree, a way to create the potential for a Holmes/Watson relationship without having to deal with teh ghey

Yes!! This is my feeling also. Also if they are going to use the "female factor" as their unique take on Sherlock, why not have both Holmes and Watson be female? Now that I could agree with, but with just Watson as female it feels too token.
