I always thought her character advanced, but not in the tradtional "strong woman becomes stronger" way. More in the "girl comes of age and goes through hell and comes out alive and has to deal with a shit-ton of mental issues" way. And I thought that was brave.
I can see how some don't get the progression of that, but to me it's always been pretty clear.

That's what I've thought. I also thought that it was "girl realizes that things are way bigger than her." Like, the first book is her winning and beating the system, but books 2 and 3 show her how much more complicated everything really is. It's not so much that Katniss becomes weaker, it's just that she has so much more to deal with.

It's not so much that Katniss became smaller; her world just became a whole lot larger.

Oh, I did like that aspect. A lot, actually. I just think it spent so much time makign that point over and over did you get it yet dear reader didja didja didja i'm makin a point see see? that it veered into "Why should I as a reader even care anymore?" around chapter 4 of Book 2.

This is the vibe that I got, too. After all she's been through, she's just not going to be perfectly well adjusted. It's a much more interesting alternative to having all of your problems solved by picking between guys in a love triangle. *coughTwilightcough*
