One good thing I will say about Catching Fire is that the Quarter Quell's arena is much cleverer than the previous' Games' generic woods arena. What did everyone think about that aspect?

....Did anyone think about that aspect?

I did! I did! I loved the arena for the Quarter Quell. Excellent work.

Yes! The descriptions of the Second Quarter Quell's arena (gorgeous but poisonous) were great, too. I think I get why people are bitching about the character-related aspects, but world-building just got so much better.

Agreed.

I really disliked the clockrena. I actually had a hard time taking anything in the QQ seriously because it felt totally contrived to me. The first arena didn't feel generic to me, it felt interesting and in a way more realistic to me. The QQ just felt hokey. A clock? Really? How do you get that by the powers that be when Seneca died because Snow hates manipulation by tributes. He'd totally be like "Wait, you want something to happen that they can easily predict? Yeah, fuck you, die."

I already disliked the book, but that was the point of no return, at which I knew I'd derive no further enjoyment from the book. (I'm glad I held on, as Book 3 was at least engaging, but wow. I read 2 because I simply couldn't believe it would be as bad as it sounded. I know people love it and I don't mean to dis them, but IMO? It was worse.)

I liked the clockrena but you're right about how predictable it was. After the first few days, they solved the riddle of the clock and, exactly like they did in the book, they were able to find a safe zone until that area's time came up, move out of it, and then go back to safety. If not for them breaking out of the arena, they could have kept up that pattern for days without any harm coming to them.

A cool idea but with a major flaw in it.

Yeah, that too. In the first book I wasn't as bothered by them hiding in the cave because I felt that part of the reason that was happening was because the Gamemakers were in some ways letting it happen. They wanted their romantic subplot just like we as readers did, so they weren't going to urge Cato to find them or otherwise force a confrontation just yet. So, okay, yeah, made sense (though a bit of a stretch.)

The clockrena though was too much for me. I mean I know that, well, there was a reason why it was predictable (trying not to spoil; I'm not sure how you make those fancy spoiler tags.) I get that part. But it was just so obviously beatable that I had a hard time with it. I was like, well if Snow sees the initial plans beforehand he'd never okay something that predictable knowing he's got clever tributes who outsmarted the GMs before. And if he doesn't get to see the plans beforehand and trusts the Head GM (that seems a stretch, especially given that the point was to kill Katniss), it would last just until Wiress's first mutter of "tick tock" and he'd be immediately ordering them to randomize things.

To me, it was logarhythmic Villain Decay and it just killed everything for me right there.

I liked it but my bf thought it was trying too hard.
