Why was she wrong to give Randle a lobotomy? He tried strangling her.

You need someone to explain why giving someone a lobotomy is wrong?

Only at the last—after he'd smashed through that glass door, her face swinging around, with terror forever ruining any other look she might ever try to use again, screaming when he grabbed for her and ripped her uniform all the way down the front, screaming again when the two nippled circles started from her chest and swelled out and out, bigger than anybody had ever even imagined, warm and pink in the light—only at the last, after the officials realized that the three black boys weren't going to do anything but stand and watch and they would have to beat him off without their help, doctors and supervisors and nurses prying those heavy red fingers out of the white flesh of her throat as if they were her neck bones, jerking him backward off of her with a loud heave of breath, only then did he show any sign that he might be anything other than a sane, willful, dogged man performing a hard duty that finally just had to be done, like it or not.<.i>

Yes please.

I meant as a punishment
We don't even do that to violent criminals, come on

(Anonymous) 2012-05-26 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
I honestly don't understand how it's anymore inhumane than a lethal injection or electric chair, though.

which are both so humane you guys

(Anonymous) 2012-05-26 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
The OP said "We don't even do that to violent criminals, come on" which I assume was meant to imply that it was worse than executing them (which is something we do do).

I for one would rather die then be reduced to that. I'm dead anyway in everyway that counts. At least do the goddamn courtesy of rubbing me out then.

I promise if anything is left of me that understands what's been going on, I'll be trying to do it to myself (and you if I understand that) anyway.

I can't believe my high school English teacher had us read this.

There are cases where lobotomies--given with the patient's consent, and knowledge of the purpose and the risks--serve a purpose, actually.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-26 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
obviously there is a difference when consent is involved.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2012-05-26 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it obvious, though? The person I replied to, when I replied to them (they clarified later), just said,

You need someone to explain why giving someone a lobotomy is wrong?

I see no qualifiers for that, like "unless they consent to it". And I think they are plenty of people who hear the term "lobotomy" and think that it's always a bad thing (you're cutting out part of a person's brain, after all), without understanding that there are reasons that it might actually be a good thing.
