If you haven't read Kristin Cashore's books, they have a couple variations on heroines who don't want kids. One heroine just flat does not want kids. The other heroine loves children, and wishes she could be a mother, but other things are more important so she chooses (trying not to spoil anything, but very definitely) not to.

The third book came out this month and I haven't read it yet, but it's a third young, female heroine so we'll see what that means.

(If you have read them, I can't think of another non-babies-ever-after series off the top of my head.)

No; I haven't read them! I am going to look those books up. I have known I haven't wanted children for a long time now, and it would be refreshing to read some child free characters.
