Doesn't have to be fairy tale. He can be redeemed but still cause them problems. He just won't be the default bad guy anymore.

And you know, sometimes it is difficult to criticise. I used to be like it with a real historical figure. I grew up in a part of England that loved Richard III - I wouldn't even accept the possibility he did some of the bad stuff history accuses him of doing because I was so wrapped up in this romantic view. I'm not like that anymore but I'm just saying I understand what it's like to be unable to see the bad sides to a figure or character. I dare say plenty of people have had their opinions influenced by their emotional attachment to a thing, there's probably some literary critics who have done it. Seems pretty normal to me, at least you admit there might be some bias there.

He just won't be the default bad guy anymore.

That's just the thing, isn't it? Movie Loki is the kind of bad guy whose criminal acts stem from trauma and shit-poor coping mechanisms, the type that can, theoretically, be talked out of pulling the trigger if you just manage to push the right buttons in his brain. But I have little faith that will ever happen, because he IS the Designated Villain, and once you move a Hollywood villain away from that part, he's no longer any use to the storytellers. :(

I hope he isn't too badly sidelined in Thor 2 but yeah, I see your point with Hollywood villains. On the other hand, it might be a good thing to essentially come back to him later once Thor 2 is done - just thinking of all the main villains for other comic book heroes and how everyone bitches about them being overused. I did see someone say Tom Hiddleston has signed for a few more films though so who knows. I'll admit this is one of those things where I haven't read the comics but I'm getting vibes from people who have that they're sick of Thor trying to convince everyone it's different this time, only for Loki to go and do something diabolical again - so maybe they want to avoid that in movie-verse.

OP

When I head Hiddles was going to be in more of the Marvelverse, my exact thought was that they couldn't keep him as the bad guy for them all. So, hope.

From what I hear, he won't be the default bad guy. Something a bit more complicated. *hopes*

What a surprise... I'm a lifelong Ricardian and your comment made me gasp.

Where did you grow up? I had to invent myself, in London.

[identity profile] sparklywalls.livejournal.com 2012-06-01 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I was born in Wakefield, not too far away from the battle site in fact! Even though Pontefract was a Lancastrian stronghold I have never encountered anyone from the old West Riding who favoured them! I lived near York for a while too, it's one of the cities I miss the most (I'm in Scotland now.) Used to be a member of the Friends of Richard III Society too. I still count him as one of my favourite historical figures, just not as hard line as I used to be about denying any faults. But I also still think he gets a worse reputation than he deserved.

That's fab. I live York - beautiful city.

Yes, I fell awfully hard for Richard as a teenager and would hear nothing against him. Now I accept he was human and flawed - and much maligned.

And then I married a bloody Welshman.

*sigh*

Yep, I'm so this except replace "Richard III" with "Prime Minister" and you get my problem. At least you admit that it's biased, OP.

+1 to all of this. I have to be unbiased with historical figures because it's my job, but I have a hard time putting my feelings away. We are just humans, after all.
