And it's all daddy's fault for playing "Highlander" with his kids. There's a scene early on where Odin literally tells ten-year-old Thor and Loki "there's two of you, but there can be only one!"... and you can see Loki's kiddy heart breaking. I disagree with how very very far a lot of people take it, but it's really no wonder 99% of fandom thinks Odin is either a douchebag or a moron, or an unholy mixture of both.

Ummm...but only one of them could be king of Asgard (unless one of them died...or was conveniently exiled to Earth, but who would want to put that thought in their kids' mind). That's sort of how kings work. I think it was a pretty nice way to put a cold hard fact.

It amuses me how hard the fandom tries to twist Odin into some demon who hated Loki with a fiery passion and was an awful father. I mean, I think he obviously made some mistakes (both Thor and Loki are total douchebags at the beginning of the movie, and Thor doesn't get better until he's spanked by Earth and grows the fuck up, and Loki still hasn't grown out of it) but it's pretty clear that he loved his kids.

Actually, IMHO, that is one of his faults. He loves his kids so much that he can't their faults.

Thor was older. He should've been the heir by default. There's no logical reason for Odin to pretend otherwise and turn it into a competition. That's just INVITING unneccessary rivalry.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-01 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
So what would you rather Odin say?

Loki: When I'm king-
Odin: Whoa whoa whoa! Hold your Sleipnirs! You ain't never gonna be king! Thor here's the heir by default. Don't worry. As Brother of the King you can still be...*thinks*...the Royal Gardner! Or how bout the Royal Fortune Teller? Eh? Eh?
Loki: *SMH*

I mean, there's pretty much not a nice way to put "you are never going to be king, barring a strange and unforeseen series of events." But at least with the way Odin put it, though only one of them can have the throne they are still considered equals.

(I also don't think that it turned into a rivalry, at least not for the throne, because I really don't think Loki ever wanted to be king. But that's just my interpretation of him, judging from his words and actions.)

Not necessarily, actually - not all monarchies work by primogeniture. In a lot of earlier monarchies (i.e. pre-high medieval period) the heir could be chosen according to who the reigning monarch thought would do the best job.

According to wikipedia, primogeniture in its modern form developed from the feudal system, so if Asgard is not and has never been a feudal state, a system wherein the king chooses whichever of his sons he thinks is best? Not terribly pleasant but also not implausible and not impractical as the eldest is not necessarily going to be the best ruler purely by virtue of being the eldest.

nayrt

NGL, I sort of figured that they went primogeniture by default of having a stereotypical "kingdom" setup. Since they never really talked about how succession in Asgard actually worked, I thought it was a fair assumption.

It would have been nice if they clarified that, though.

[identity profile] kathkin.livejournal.com 2012-06-01 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's a fair assumption given that it's the default now (pretty sure all european monarchies work by primogeniture and they are the ones most people are familiar with) so if they did intend to go with a different kind of succession they should have made it clear. And if they didn't then either they don't get how primogeniture works or wow that was a dick move on Odin's part.

[identity profile] lovelycudy.livejournal.com 2012-06-01 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I assumed that Asgard was a "chose the better candidate" kind of kingdom, which is why I thought Loki was so pissed at Thor, whom he deemed unworthy of the throne (and he was, until he had his change of heart and everything), being chosen. And I thouht that was related with the fact that Loki's talents were kind of "second-class" compared to Thor's. I was recently told that the Norse considered magic a female occupation, which makes sense.

I kind of like this interpretation. I always thought that Odin loved his kids (and saw Loki as one of "his kids"), but failed at expressing it/at calling them out for their faults. I mean, it takes until Thor is almost starting a new war for him to decide that enough is enough already!

(Anonymous) 2012-06-01 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Yeah, I think his kids were Odin's blind-spot, so to speak. I think he was ridiculously biased in favor of them, so he couldn't see just how messed up they were. Or rather, he might have been able to see their problems, but he didn't want to see them.

Like you said, it takes Thor literally starting a war for Odin to be like, "Okay, that was it. Time for you to grow the fuck up." And I think that Loki was very good at hiding his true emotions, so it wasn't until Loki confronted Odin about the frost giant thing that Odin really understood just how flawed Loki was.

Anyways, I got a lot of Odin feels, and a lot of feels about that family, so it sort of bugs me when people seem to boil it down to "ODIN WAS A MONSTER, BLAARGH!" I don't think Odin was a perfect father (obviously) but I think he genuinely loved his kids, and I think it sort of broke him when he realized just how far off the mark he had been with them (hence the unfortunately timed Odin-sleep).

[identity profile] philstar22.livejournal.com 2012-06-01 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
This so much. Odin treated them both equally. Thor, as the older brother, was most likely going to be king, regardless of the adoption issue. That didn't mean Odin treated Loki any less. Loki is the one who decided they weren't his "real" family and that they had somehow slighted him and basically made up a whole bunch of stuff in his head.
