Have you tried alcohol? I have major anxiety and panic and ocd when it comes to my writing, which can often lead to major blocks. So to get myself started I will occasionally either write while sleep deprived/up late or have a couple drinks. Doesn't work all the time, but it does some of the time.

LOL
When I get drunk or high I get too horny to write anything nuanced or subtle at all, it's all just fucking with no context whatsoever

AYRT

(Anonymous) 2012-06-05 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I wasn't suggesting getting drunk, just a drink or two to loosen up.

nice assuming that'd be legal for the anon, i'd bet they're still a teen

(Anonymous) 2012-06-06 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
nice assuming that'd be illegal for the anon, i'd be they're an adult

(Anonymous) 2012-06-06 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
tbh the secret screams mentally immature and that's generally connected with legally immature, aka the <18 set

Ugh, I'm really leery of advocating any kind of dependency on alcohol. I've just seen too many friends go down a bad path that way.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-06 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, having a drink or two once in awhile to help relax your mind and get the writing started is not what I see as "advocating dependency on alcohol." There's a huge difference between having a drink or two and getting drunk, and a huge difference between using it once in awhile and depending on it every night or day to cope.

I understand being wary. I come from a family of alcoholics and I'm wary about my own alcohol use, but you can't just assume any drinking will lead to alcoholism or bad things.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-06 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I meant more like specifically for a purpose other than enjoyment. The feeling that you NEED alcohol to be funnier/more relaxed is an attitude that I've seen go sour really fast. But yeah I can see where you're coming from.

Hey, anon, don't worry...I'm worse. I've never had sex or even kissed anybody, never so much as been on a date, but I write lots of romantic relationships...and plenty of porn. ;P

(Anonymous) 2012-06-05 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I love getting told "you write good sex, for a virgin" ugh what does that even mean. Easier just not to mention it :T

(Anonymous) 2012-06-05 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
The awesome thing about writing romantic relationships is that every one of them is different! There isn't really a way to be 'inaccurate' about writing them, at least I don't think so.

Just write the characters interacting with each other, and don't worry about how relationships are 'supposed' to go. Good luck, anon!

I don't think you have to experience something to be able to write about it. Sure, it helps, but it isn't mandatory.

You know, there isn't one rght formula to romantic relationship. Also, you don't have to experience everything to write about it. Observe! I'm sure you know a few couples. You can draw inspiration from their interactions...

(Anonymous) 2012-06-06 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Should be fine, anon. How many yaoi fangirls have the actual experience of being a gay man in a homosexual relationship? Doesn't stop 'em. Go get 'em.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-06 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Watch romantic movies OP, that's where I harness my experience. They might not be 100% accurate, but better than nothing. At least you see how couples are supposed to act and so on, you can tell what appeals to you and just run with that. Heh I'm 20 years old and have absolutely zero experience in romantic relationships, there are more pathetic people around, don't stress yourself too much with it.

I have this problem, especially when writing anything that takes a turn for the physical. I like knowing what I'm talking about, and I feel like I don't know anything. :/

My suggestion would be to focus less on the fact that it's a ~romantic relationship~, and focus more on the characters in question. How do they interact? How would that change if they admitted to loving each other/start having sex/etc -- are they characters who deal well with admitting vulnerability and opening up, or will that be hard for them? If the characters have ever been in other romantic or sexual relationships in canon (assuming this is for fan-fic, not original fic), how did they act in those? Do you know people who remind you of the characters? How do THEY act in romantic relationships? Etc. etc.

I've had my fair share of different sorts of romantic relationships, but TBH I don't generally find those experiences particularly useful when trying to write romance in fic, since I rarely end up writing about characters who are like me, or relationships that are very like my own.

In my mind, the only way a story about romance would be "inaccurate" is if it doesn't ring true to the characters. As someone above said, there's no right way to be in a relationship, anyway. Everyone's different. Every couple is different. So what makes these two (or more!) characters tic?

Sleep deprived IDGAF! LOL I do that too.

And on that note that's me and NC-17. I'm sexually active but I'm just so vanilla I feel like I can't write porn for fandom.
