Personally it doesn't bother me. I loved the first book, but the writing does leave a lot to be desired. It's the world and the interactions that are interesting, not Collins' writing.

Some writers do great things with words. Some writers have awesome ideas and that's about it.

All of this. The second time through I could hardly get through it because of the writing. The general ideas in the world she builds goes a little awry later in the series...

Some people are worldbuilders and not much else. :-)

I'm reading the books right now (currently on the third), and yeah, this is pretty much it. Her writing is really not that great, and I can't stand the first-person, but the world and some of the interactions (mostly those unrelated to the main love triangle) are fascinating enough for me to continue.

This. I can get used to the perspective she uses, but she does have a lot more talent for world building than she does with words.

STAR WARS!

Hate all you want, time will only prove my point over and over.

IDK... so long as you do the research and know what you're talking about, what's the harm? Collins created an amazing world, but some people have issues with her writing style. IMO, worldbuilding > writing style. It gives you a nice big sandbox to play in, and you can put your own spin on the writing style.

Slightly OT, but I've been writing fanfic for a game I've never played, after telling myself for years to never do that. Mostly I researched the game's wiki, watched some cut scenes on Youtube (only some are on there though), and talked to a friend who is playing the game. He's the only one who's seen the fic, so that's fair enough, but he told me it's good and IC and I should put it up somewhere else.

I want to play the game myself but I'm a shitty gamer and probably wouldn't make it all the way through.

So anyway, in the past I might have said "No way, don't write fic unless you read the books or saw the movie," but now, I really can't judge.

Are there let's play's of it on other sites? (Like vimeo, blipper, etc.)

Or archived in forums or places like lparchive.org? That might help.

Or if both of you can make the time, you could watch your friend play through the game.

ayrt

Thanks for the tip about the Let's Plays; that's a great idea.

Unfortunately my friend lives in another country so I can't watch him game, as fun as that might be. (It really would be fun, because he's good at gaming but not concieted about it. Which is part of why I want to write him fic about his favorite character.)

Aww, you're a good friend!

I'm sorry about you two living in different countries. I hope everything goes right in your fanfic endeavors.

Lol this reminds me of my childhood and playing Final Fantasy 7 strictly by walkthroughs I'd found in a gaming magazine. I can't really call myself anything more than a casual gamer though. I was always more into FF for the stories and characterization than for the gameplay, and IMO that's ok. Just google some instructions when you get stuck and play it however you want to.

It's not uncommon. I was like this with the X-files. Never watched the show and learned everything through fandom. The major points of canon are pretty prevalent in fandom and if you make a mistake, you can claim you were trying something AU.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-06 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
I'm okay with this. I loved all three books, but the writing style was lacking and I can see why other's wouldn't. But if you're having fun in the fandom? Go for it!

I'm actually really looking forward to the next film beause I think it can easily fix several of the problems I had with the second book.

I'm curious how they will shoot some of the deaths, because more characters we know will die in creative and gory ways. I hugged myself after reading the acid rain sequence in the second book.
