You...would want to live in a world where they kill you if you're a twin? What if your job was a birther? Or what if it was your job to kill the unwanted babies?

I hate the giver, a lot. The ending where they die (I don't believe they made it) always ruined the story for me. It's too sad.

Thank you for pointing out that women's bodies are a commodity in that universe. That's a disgusting thing to wish for.

I hate how they're forced into giving birth, and then bam-they're hard labor for the rest of their life. Such a waste.

I remember the part where Jonas's sister said she might like to be a birther because it sounded relaxing and immediately went 'ugh.' On the bright side I also remember their parents telling her off for it.

Yeah, in that world though, you've gotta remember that nobody really knows much about the world. I mean, they're taught that This Is How Things Are, so they don't really think about how terrible it is.

The fact that she's like YEAH GREAT JOB 8D is indicative of how horrid that world is. And I think we were supposed to go D:

Am I totally reading this wrong or are you accusing the secret poster of wishing for that?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-06 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they're accusing the poster of forgetting that, but I'm not how much it actually matters. Regardless of what the OP was thinking, that world is a terrible thing to wish for.

There are sequels wherein Jonas and Gabe appear, briefly and subtly though. It's canon to the series that they made it. When you know that, it's much less sad and more hopeful.

Before I even knew about the sequels I read a quote from the author where she said something about how they did make it. And I was weirded out actually because I didn't picture that at all.

I mean, I'm glad they did survive in the sense that I care about the characters and wanted them to be OK but it actually struck me as a huge WTF surprise and almost a weird way to end the book since he had no idea where he was going and everything seemed so hopeless.

The idea of those sequels bummed me out, though. When I read it in school I really dug the ambiguous ending.

They don't die. They appear in a later book, Messenger.

maybe the OP would be ok with it because he/she would be oblivious of all that stuff? everyone but The Givers either doesn't know what release actually is or just goes along with it because that's how things are. though that doesn't really make it much better, it's still creepy that way because they're so unaware of what things really mean.

GUUHHHHH yes. The birther thing always sounded horrible to me, even (ESPECIALLY) in sixth grade.

(Could you elect to apply for Release if you didn't like the job you were given? I can't remember. I remember Jonas not being allowed to, but maybe everyone else was?)

They don't die. There are sequel novels. They are alive in them.
