Without the compilation, as much as it sucks, I think the fandom would have died much faster.

This, pretty much. (Although I'd qualify that while I had wtf moments and STILL have pet peeves, I've come to pretty much accept compilation as it is.) I'm fairly sure FF7's enjoyed more activity in its fanbase than most of the other Final Fantasies.

Without Advent Children and later entries, OP's secret would likely stop at "I miss when the fandom for the game was huge and active."
