I don't know if slash is necessarily easier to do well when it is not practically canon, but, for me, slash fic tends be more interesting if it features a developing relationship as opposed an established one. I think a lot of people prefer reading about relationship forming (from friends to lovers, enemies to lovers, etc.), that's why "first time" fic is, like, 75% of fic. When the canon features a couple that have a (seemingly) canon romantic relationship, then all us lovers of the slow burns and first times are left feeling like we've seen it already. That's why, for example, I prefer reading reboot Kirk/Spock to TOS K/S.

So, pretty much what you said, but slightly different. :)
