...am I seriously the only person who doesn't miss the "magic" at all? I love to see bending in a completely new environment and I love the whole magic vs. technology problem. I can't wait to see how it all ends.

(Having a main character that I can actually, y'know, relate to and like also helps.)

yeah, i'm not that upset about it either, plus it seems like they're building up to avatar state/communing with aang stuff soon so it's not completely gone, just on the backburner with everything else that's happening and korra's own spirituality issues.

Yes, THIS! Much love for the original series but the feel of Korra really hammers home that the times, they do change. It's refreshing to me to see a fantasy world actually advance technologically and politically instead of being stuck forever in the vague middle ages.

Same. I mean, I do have issues with some of the pacing, and the necessity of a filler love triangle episode in what was initially supposed to be a short series, but I feel like there's so much awesome payoff because it's not a continuous reference to old Gaang's story.

If it was simply fanservice, or just retelling the first series with a few updates, I don't think I'd bother watching it. I really like that both can be seen as standalone. So far anyways. I'm totally looking forward to Korra getting in touch with the spirit world and Aang.

Nah, you're not alone. I really enjoyed ATLA, but I'm loving Korra so much more because it's something we haven't seen before. It's much more of a modern world, and combining magic (well, bending) and technology is one of my favourite themes in sci fi and fantasy.

(...How WOULD you classify Korra, anyway? It has sci fi themes. I'm going with science fantasy for now.)

This! And admittedly, being FN and usually only seeing FN characters painting with all the colours of the wind on U.S. television, it's cool to have Korra be a 20th century girl for whom spirituality is not her strong suit.

I have to admit, I read FN as "Fire Nation" at first and got VERY confused, haha. But yeah, that's an amazing part of the show.

YES. I found Atla to be mildly entertaining at best. With LoK I can be involved and find the world FASCINATING.

Probably helps that on this show I LIKE THE MAIN CHARACTERS.

In Atla I only really liked Sokka until Toph showed up.

Okay, I'm glad you mentioned that because yeah, I do really like the steampunk vibe. Even if I don't like LoK as much as ATLA in general, I do love that bit of it. :)
