(Copy-pasted and tweaked reply to a similar secret made a while ago)

I'd like to say something to you as an FtM person, and I'm going to take my own advice as I say this to you: Just do it. To Hades With Fear of Offense. Here's my reasoning:

As you write, you'll find that your character's MtF status is just one small aspect of her. A tulip in a spray of flowers, if you will. When you get to a point where that flower needs to be focused on, you'll do some research and learn and between that, your love for Kim Heechul, and your desire to be respectful, you will come to what you feel is the way to display said flower so that your audience will see your sincerity.

As for characterization? How you present it is simply how your character lives her MtF life. Nobody can say she's right, wrong, or offensive if she's doing things her own way.

I RP a teenage FtM who is a womanizer, epic troll, insufferable goody two-shoes little ponce who doesn't pack, uses ace bandages to bind, and has the math and science skills of an eleven year old doped up on cold medicine.

My RP partner, another FtM, plays his arch-nemesis, a lazy seventeen year old mechanically talented ingrate with a hair-trigger volcanic temper and no idea how to talk to women.

The only thing they have in common is their ages and their sexes. Does that mean one of us is doing it "wrong" or "offensively"? No. Just means that their sexes and ages barely factor in to their personalities.

Lie I said, it's one flower in the arrangement. Actually, I would say that treating it as "no big deal, and when it comes up, it comes up, but we have other things to talk about, too, and so what?" is my personal favorite way of handling it.

And you're going to make mistakes the first time. You will, and it doesn't mean you're bad/evil/mean/hateful, it means that you're less likely to make the same mistake again because you'll learn from them. And there is always going to be one person who takes some offense to your story, but let me tell you, OP: if they're anyone worth listening to, they'll message you privately and tell you (without swearing at you and calling you names and claiming you're a baby-torturer) not only what they found offensive, but also a note about how you could have worded it so that it wouldn't be offensive. It doesn't take much to tear someone down, but to offer alternatives really takes strength.

And you have made it clear that you want to be respectful. So if anyone wants to treat you poorly for making a mistake instead of helping you to improve, they can go sit and spin.

I mean, how are we ever going to get to a place of peace and understanding if everyone is so afraid of "doing it wrong" that they sequester themselves and stick to writing only about themselves? If someone shows a sincere interest in attempting a story, they should be heard and encouraged and (if need be) directed. That's how we spread understanding.

In fact, what you want to do is very, very important. It says "This is how I see things". That way, if something isn't right, someone can say "No, it's more like this" and everyone can learn and grow. Isn't that what's important?

If you ever do write it and if you ever post it, I would read it, even though I'm not part of the Super Junior fandom.

Tl;dr maybe, but I want you to know I mean every single word.

Thanks for posting this comment. I didn't see it the first time around (I only just started reading FS again for the first time in years) and it's so positive and interesting.

I feel like the truth about writing fics about things you are not is that, 99.9% of the time, no one cares. You make huge mistakes and no one notices. It's pretty vain to assume that there is an audience out there that is going to hang off your every stray dangling phrase to look for reasons to fault your portrayal of something or other - in reality the most common insult that's going to be levelled at your writing is the silent click on the back button three paragraphs in.

Race wanks and trans* wanks are amazingly rare in terms of the volume of fic written about trans* characters and CoC, and they're pretty much always escalated by defensive writers trying to plead that their work is perfect because, gosh, they couldn't possibly have fucked anything up. People who are put off from even trying because of that slight possibility of getting criticised for it have no business sharing their writing in public at all imo. You don't have a right to never be criticised. So my cis, white attitude is to dive right in, know full well that I am not going to do it right but do the best I can, and in the very slight eventuality that someone tells me that I'm writing things wrong, listen to them and learn as much as possible.
