Well, there goes my desire to play Bordlerlands. The guys look like grizzled FPS protagonists and the girls look like little dolls. That, uh, some thematic consistency right there, art director. I'm impressed by your vision and shocked - shocked - that you would make all of the men unattractive but the women very attractive. That is a bold and daring decision and I don't know how you came up with it.

Seriously, though, what's with always having the one woman out of four characters? Left 4 Dead (both games) did it, and now the new Far Cry is doing it. Why not two women? Or, dare I ask, three women? GoW3 had two, and are you telling me most games are less progressive than Gears of War?

Find me an FPS that isn't like that, though. Seriously.

Also, baby steps. As in, I'd prefer a game with one female character to a game with none.

Find me an FPS that isn't like that, though. Seriously.

I already pointed out that Gears of War 3 had two. (Technically, a 3PS, I realize.) But R6V2 also had two, one of whom was the protagonist.

As in, I'd prefer a game with one female character to a game with none.

I disagree wholeheartedly. I would rather play a game with no female characters than a token who looks like a 12-year-old girl and whose design was clearly meant to pander. R6V2 had a tough-looking woman with a realistic hairstyle wearing the same swat gear as everyone else and the same age as the male characters. If GoW3 and a goddamn Tom Clancy game can do it, there is no reason not to expect it of other games.

Also, apparently Dead Island has two female characters (thanks, anon below).

So yeah, no reason not to expect it.

Sexist, but true: the sole reason female PCs exist at all is to appease we female gamers. Busty NPCs fill the sexytimes requirement, but the target demographic of male 16-30 has no interest in playing a woman, if they have a choice, and if they have to play "the bitch," they're at least going to demand tits and ass as a consolation prize.

The ardent devotees, both male and female, of fem!Shep make that statement demonstrably untrue. Also, a shitton of the guys I play R6V2 with choose fem!Bishop and you can't even see T&A under all that flak armor.

So try again.

I dunno about this. It's not like male players had to make, say, Tomb Raider a wild success, and that franchise was certainly not made with female players in mind.

Dead Island had two women. One is Chinese and the other is Aboriginal. Both are badass.

I did not know that. Guess I'm going to have to pick up Dead Island!

(Anonymous) 2012-06-08 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
Too bad they're both made out of horrible stereotypes.

Also, it's a really bad game.

Except Borderlands is an infinitely better game than Dead Island. Try not to base your choices on looks and more on content, hm?

Mmmmm I love the smell of ignorant condescension in the morning.

Aesthetics speak to overall concept, which includes all design choices.

Why would I play a game that insults my intelligence by pandering to gender stereotypes when I could play Dark Souls, or Skyrim, or R6V2, or any countless other excellent games both aesthetically and in story and gameplay, concept and design?

It's a competitive market out there, and no matter how well-craft Borderlands is as a game, there are plenty more as good or better that don't have a single female character who looks like little girl, on which I could spend my time and money. If they want me as a consumer, no matter what their game plays like, they'll have to change the character design. It's as simple as that. They don't make the only good video game. As a consumer, I vote with my wallet.

I have an idea: if you think Borderlands is high quality enough that I should overlook a gallingly awful design choice and play it on other merits, how about telling me what those are? Why should I play it and not another game from the same genre that lacks said galling design choice? What makes Borderlands superior?

So far said choice, along with snide condescension and content-free value judgments about being an "infinitely better game" than another game I haven't played, are not exactly winning me over. Go on, tell me why it's good. I'm not going to do that research on my own, I'm playing Skyrim, and the Borderlands marketing itself has completely lost my interest.

So, you're going to base your decision to play it on its looks? Why don't you read a little more into the story and game mechanics of Borderlands first? Lilith is supposed to look pretty. She's a Siren. A rare breed of humans that have alien technology implanted in them, hence why she can do special moves. She's also an assassin who no doubt uses what she's got as a weapon. And her clothing really isn't that bad compared to other games out there. It looks normal.

Oh man, can I just, like, hug you? I'm just glad someone on this thread has actually played the friggin' game, and knows better than to judge it by its outward appearance when there's so much more to it. Thank you

Oh boy, fluff to justify making the one female character look porcelain while the male characters look grizzled! I sure am swayed.

Maybe if they had another female character, who was also grizzled, you know, for contrast...
terabient: Anime-styled profile pic that is kinda, sorta like me (Default)

If it helps, I've played Borderlands and its gameplay struck me as slightly above average at best. The world and characters are fucking boring too.

IDGAF about Borderlands 2.

Basically you're making the right choice.

I find it more than a little irritating that you say "less progressive than Gears of War" as if there is something wrong with those games. Not only are they good ass games, but the GOW team actually does pay attention to their female fan base. Women are included without being made to look weak or being unrealistically dressed for war.

Btw, there are way more than 2 bad ass women in those games/stories.
