1. Girlfriend doesn't mean straight. Sexuality is a spectrum.

2. Clint/Coulson is hold over from Thor and a brief scene there along with some tie in comics stuff. Phil Coulson hasn't existed in the comics continuity until about a month ago.

This...I'm really surprised at all the reactions this is getting that would even make this comment necessary. u_u

(In my headcanon, Coulson is bi. And I think is crush on Steve is a real thing, and it's adorable, but I don't really see it being reciprocated, so... *shrug*)

It's sad, isn't it? but I guess a lot of people still see it as a one or the other kind of thing. :\

(I do too, though I'm not too sure about the crush on Steve being more than just that--a crush--but then I ship Phil/Nick so... LOL)

Eh. I wasn't going to respond because I figured it was a given that having a love interest of the opposite sex doesn't mean you are straight in real life, but I dont want people thinking I'm some sort asshole perpetuating that "bisexuality doesn't exist." Hollywood throws these "oh, he's got a girlfriend" things in to ward off the notion that a character could be gay/bi.

So, yeah, we in fandom can speculate that even though Coulson has a girlfriend, he could also, someday, have a boyfriend. Hollywood writers/the masses know that girlfriend=not gay! That's what I was getting at- in a round-about way, admittably. Throwing in the "he has a girlfriend" thing is another way for Hollywood to say "This character is not gay/bi."

I... don't think they do a lot of the time. There is still a very prevalent feeling that "Oh, it's okay, they're with -insert opposite sex here-, they're straight" and I doubt Hollywood writers are exempt from thinking that way. I'd love to have more faith in them and in the masses, but I'm a tired old bisexual woman that just a little too jaded for her own good.
