Well, I don't meet your requirements for being an adult. Not even close. And not through lack of trying. This world chewed me up and spat me out broken and useless.

None of that is fandom's fault. If anything, fandom helped cushion my fall. And it comforts me now. I'm not going to drop one of the biggest sources of joy in my life just because I can't meet someone else's standards of "being an adult" first.

Don't! Happiness is all that really matters in life, IMO. I absolutely hate most people's idea of "adulthood": being married/in a relationship with a solid job, a house and two and a half kids. As if *nothing* else in life is of any importance. News flash! Those are NOT everyone's top priorities, and it's not impossible to be a mature, responsible ADULT unless you have those things. By any means. I mean, I'm not violently opposed to having children, and I'd actually really like to be married eventually, BUT I am not putting either of those things over my career ambitions or my writing. Period. I think hobbies are very important, and I consider myself blessed that I've found something I'm truly passionate about (writing) and a career that I really want to do. I have quite a few friends and an active social life, but nine times out of ten give me the choice between going out to a party or staying home and writing and I'll pick the latter. I do think being independent and financially self-sufficient is important, but the point is that some people have hobbies and passions that make them happier than other people or a lucrative job ever could, and the notion that there is something wrong with that actually kind of angers me. As long as you're happy, how is it anyone else's business what you do with your life? Go for it! Enjoy fandom!

Btw, to the person above aiffe, I'm not saying that this is what you're saying. This is just me sharing my two cents as far as the whole situation goes. ^^

Oh, my comment said I'm not giving fandom up, no worries. I love it too much, and it's been far too good to me.

TBH I detect a whiff of ableism in the whole, "You need to have XYZ to Be An Adult," because some of these things are just not possible for everyone. Some of us will never have the mental functionality to hold down a job. And there's other privilege in these assumptions too. Like if I was going to get married, it'd be to another woman, and that's something that's all kinds of legally complicated. Maybe one of the things I like about fandom so much is that these doors aren't closed to me, that I can come and participate as I am.
