Yeah, that whole "but mine's version still better" sure hints at your amazing writing abilities. Oh wait, you don't have any -- seeing as how you need to steal stuff from others.

Urgh. I hope you're just trying to stir trouble.

Not stealing. That's how most professional writers work.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Please don't start that.

Cassandra Clare, is that you?

People sure do the weirdest things to gain online popularity.

I get wanting to rewrite an idea or try your hand at it -- I've had that feeling before -- but the least you could have done was ask. Pretty sure they would've been flattered if you said you really enjoyed the idea and would like to try writing something based on it.

That sounds very much like plagiarism to me, even though you didn't steal the fic itself. I mean, you didn't just take the general idea, you actually "re-wrote the fic".
And the whole "my copy is so better than the original" thing ? It might be true, but, you know, it's just your opinion. Not an actual fact. And even if it really is ten times better, it doesn't change the fact that stealing someone else's idea is despicable.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-08 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"my version is better" is an excuse that you're coming up to try to not feel guilty

feel guilty

it was plagiarism

just come clean

If you had re-wrote this for yourself (like a lot of people apparently do with fanfic) and never posted it online or showed it to anyone else...that's fine imo. It's not hurting anyone and if you get enjoyment out of it, good. But...posting it online and letting other people believe it's your own idea and work? Is just not cool. I'd take this down immediately if I were you.

(Also, you should probably just own up to it now. A majority of the time...if you feel guilty, there's probably a reason. Not always, but in this case? Yea.)

(Anonymous) 2012-06-08 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
You're a horrible person, but despite what everyone is saying, don't own up to it. Just don't do it again.

I think it's a little bit of an exaggeration to say that OP is a horrible person for this, but I agree with the rest of the comment. And the fact that you think it's somehow less bad because "your" version was better doesn't really mean anything - I'd rather be a horrible writer with amazing ideas than the best writer in the world who doesn't have an ounce of creativity.

Just being inspired by a general idea is often okay, provided you develop your own story. Some fandoms have common tropes and themes, after all, so sometimes there is repetition.

But simply "re-writing" someone else's fic isn't too cool.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
So you took someone else's fic and rewrote it, and you think that shows talent over the other person? They were the one to write it. You just reworded it.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
So according to you, the die on the right is better than the die of the left. How conceited, and trollish.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
LOL, it's not a great thing to do, but apparently I'm the only one here who doesn't think you're a terrible person. Could be you're bullshitting that you changed enough to make it unrecognizable and therefore didn't really work as hard for the story, could also be that you didn't really rip off that much but can't help feeling guilty about it.

There was one time a while back when a great fic with a pretty original premise came out, and within the day it had been posted this other person in the fandom started writing a fic that was suspiciously similar, and yeah, maybe it was a coincidence, but the author only came across as more suspicious with their author's notes saying things like "I came up with this idea out of nowhere last night!" I was talking to the original author about it and we were both pretty peeved, but she said, "It's not like I wouldn't have been totally fine with her doing her own thing with the idea if she'd asked me about it, it just irritated me that she seemed to be openly denying she could have gotten the inspiration from anywhere." I think you're better than that if you at least feel guilty about it, but keep in mind that you wouldn't feel that way if you'd asked the author about it. If it's something the author probably wouldn't approve of, maybe it's too close to their idea. I don't think you committed some ethical sin, but in fandom, where we're all stealing to some extent, we have to rely on some admittedly subjective etiquette and treating other people's work the way we'd want our own work treated.

I think most people are upset over the fact that the OP re-wrote the fic *and* posted it claiming that the idea is their's [without asking the original author if it was okay by them to re-write, and give credit for the idea], than they are that the OP re-wrote it in general.

This is a good comment. I like this comment.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yours might very well be better, but you're still plagiarizing swine.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 08:32 am (UTC)(link)
It depends how original the story was to begin with, and how much you rewrote it, imo.

One of my friends is a professional writer and she often gets people telling her "I have that great idea for a novel, how about I say it to you, you write the book and we share 50/50" - when they're being generous. Some would like 80% of the credit, for the idea.

But the truth is, there aren't so many outstanding ideas that have never been written before. The real achievement is to actually sit at your computer and write the damn thing in a way that will make it interesting for people.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 09:42 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I think if you asked your friend how they'd feel if someone took one of their stories and 're-wrote' because 'their version would be better' - probably using the same characters and the exact same set up - then, chances are, your friend would be pretty upset if someone did it. Re-writing someone's story =/= using the same premise or basic idea.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 08:36 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think you're a horrible human being for doing this, but I do think it was a shitty thing to do and you should just come clean and credit the original writer.

Also, as others pointed out, if you'd simply asked the original writer if you could borrow his/her idea, they probably would've said yes. Many writers I know would be flattered to know that someone liked their fic idea enough to want to run with it and write their own story.

Unlike most other people in this thread, I don't actually have a huge problem with this, but I suppose it all depends on what you mean by "re-write." Did you take the fundamental structure and plot beats of the fic and execute them better? Or did you just borrow/steal/whatever the basic idea? There's a huge latitude here, and we don't have enough information to call the OP a horrible person.

In either case, though, I don't think there was any reason not to give a nod to the original writer. Seriously, this is fan fiction. They're not going to sue you, they're probably going to be flattered, and attention is the currency of fandom. So yeah, you should've credited the original writer.

Still, I don't understand the cries of plagiarism. Fanfiction is all about generating new versions of existing ideas, and this doesn't necessarily seem that problematic to me, though the devil is in the details.

This. Without reading both fics, we don't have a clue what they actually took and didn't take, nor how close the fics were. Same general idea? I could find you fifty fics that have werewolf!character!a finding their mate and the pack not liking it and drama! fighting! true love!with!knotting!sex!!

So, yeah.

when you get down to it, all fic is a rewrite of previous fic, just in your own style
