I thought they kept the focus on him being an abuser more than a sadist. At least in the movie. It was clear Audrey didn't enjoy being hit and was too scared to say otherwise, that he was a bully to her and to his patients and anyone he had power over. I'm not read-up on the lifestyle, but I figured "getting off on inflicting pain on a consenting adult" and "getting off on inflicting pain" were two different things.

Except he's not a sadist in the SM sense; when a masochist shows up (the Bill Murray character, in the Rick Moranis movie version), Orin squicks the heck out. I thought that was a clever way for the film to go "hey, we're not bagging on people who do this consensually; it's the non-consent this guy's into." He's just an abuser who's made a living out of dishing it out.

Yeah this. SM and true sadism are totally different things and they make it pretty clear that he's just a straight-up abuser.

Yeah, this. I kind of think that's the very reason the original (non-musical) version decided to include that scene. It's not about shaming people who enjoy healthy SM relationships; it's about portraying an asshole character as beingan asshole, despite his kinks.

I don't get this secret. Do you condone getting off on the legitimate pain and suffering of non-consenting victims, or are you just extremely confused about this guy's character? He used a non-sexual service as a way to hurt people for money and abused a woman, all of which was against the will of everyone involved except him. That's not a commentary on you wanting to drip hot wax on your consenting partner's nipples or whatever the fuck any more than a character who ties people up and rapes them is a stealthy criticism of bondage.
