It wouldn't surprise me at all if that turned out to be the case. I hear that that relationship / character hit home with other people, too.

Agreed. This was too well done to be made up. The writer knew something about the material. Mabye it was there experience, maybe they saw somebody else have it, but they witnessed it, no doubt. Life imitates art and all that.

The people who wrote Gothel obviously were tapping into some pretty common traits of abusers. Seriously, if I had a nickel for every time someone in RL or online has said "I know someone like Gothel" I'd... be able to buy a few drinks.

Gothel was hands down the creepiest Disney villain for me. Sea witches don't exist. Evil sorcerers don't exist. Mothers like her exist far too often.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-08 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. True horror is the one that is the most plausible, not the most fantastical one.

Word. I can't imagine calling her the least interesting Disney villain. She was just...chilling.

Thinking about it- I'm pretty my grandmother is a personification of Gothel towards my mom. But just leave in all the criticism, make her only good quality be her cooking, and imagine that she hates everything (like how Ann Coulter does), is racist + xenophobic + can't stand Yankees.

Gods, this.

My mom wasn't like Gothel, but my dad was. Some of the things Gothel said to Rapunzel were things I have heard from him word-for-word. I love the movie but good gods.

And then I read a review that tried to defend Gothel as a "good mother" and that the only people who disliked her were just sexist. >:(

Was it on the blog of a certain transphobic radfem? Because that was all kinds of fucked up.

[personal profile] elialshadowpine 2012-06-09 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. Lemme find it. Here -- I think the sexism note is somewhere in the comments, where the author gets more and more vitriolic in defending Gothel (whose name she managed to miss entirely).

I think they must have been going for a relatable terror rather than a fantastical terror. It might not click with everyone, but people who do have mothers or anyone like that seem to find Gothel disturbing enough.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-08 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I went into Tangled not knowing anything about Gothel. I just thought it was going to be a cutesy movie with a standard evil witch villain.

Gothel wound up reminding me so much of my own mother that I will never be able to watch that movie again.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
OT-ish but I liked the concept of Gothel, but was irritated that Rapunzel wasn't realistically portrayed as a subject to that raising. It would have been more interesting to see Rapunzel take everything Gothel says as gospel and slowly realize it's not, rather than doubt her from the outset.
loracarol: (Default)

[personal profile] loracarol 2012-06-09 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
But that's what she does? The only thing she doesn't take as gospel is that she wants to go outside. Unless you're talking about how Rapunzel doesn't run around thinking that the whole world has

It's not until the end, after she's seen the world and realized that it's not as bad as Gothel said, and that there's more to Rapunzel then Gothel claims that Rapunzel doubts her.

tl;dr Rapunzel does take everything as gospel... She's just also extremely optimistic about "outside".

different anon

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
I think that what the other person meant is that Rapunzel was, at least compared to how she could have grown up and how people in real life in that sort of situation have grown up, more subtle in her problems than you'd expect. Which makes sense, what with it being a Disney movie. They couldn't go too far in that sense.

It does explain why some people miss the fact that the relationship was abusive.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 11:50 am (UTC)(link)
Even then, not all people who go through abuse completely 100% believe *everything* the abuser says - so even if she didn't, it wouldn't be completely unrealistic either. I know with my mother [who was...an awful lot like Gothel, even down to the 'You don't *really* want that right? I mean there's x,y, and z that's *so* bad about it!'] there were times I just behaved as if I did because it would keep the status quo from getting worse.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
TBH I was with Rapunzel up until...pretty much the very end, where the ending seemed much too clean-cut about her happily transitioning to her new family after her mother figure turned out to be abusive and then died.

It's Disney, so it didn't surprise me. Just made me think that there would probably be problems that didn't get to show because it's for family fun.
