index is what appears when you log on into any .com or .org site (usually, unless they do special script stuff to change it, or something).
What I think is happening is that, right now you're seeing a placeholder of sorts because you haven't built (read: uploaded any html files) your site yet.
You need to either create your own webpages to replace that.
It's not very difficult, you can even do it on notepad, and there are tons of websites with simple tutorials for that.
Alternatively, from what I hear, Dreamhost is a very popular site, so they might have their own templates or site builders, so you could use those instead and save yourself time.
Anyway, if you only want your site to link to your images, you don't even need to upload html files (I think? I hope I'm not leading you astray with my assumptions), you just need to upload them to your site and then link to them from wherever you need to.
There has to be some sort of "upload manager" lying in your "control panel" or its equivalent around for that.
