Yes, there's a lot of attention- and approval-seeking going on. One way to feel good about yourself is to look for people who are obviously worse, and if you can't readily find them then you will have to manufacture them. "I need you to be an ignorant bigot so that I can feel good about myself in comparison." It's not the calling out of actual bigotry that is a problem, it's making the assumption that a complete stranger needs you to educate them that crosses the line into hypocrisy and general uselessness.
