Characters of color exist even in fiction. Is it really raining so hard on your fandom parade if, for once, things are about POC instead of being all about whites or catering to whites? White people get ninety-nine percent of the world, you don't need to begrudge the crumbs thrown the way of POC.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP.

I love PoC characters. I wish there were more of them. I want more characters like me that grew up in a nation where people of their skin color and culture were not the standard or the group in power. My problem with calling Korra a PoC is that she isn't considered a "PoC" in-world and she doesn't face the same issues and struggles and judging for her skin color and ethnicity that we do. Take that all away and we might as well be white besides the superficial skin tones.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
But that's the thing; unless I'm terribly mistaken about this discussions (not in the fandom), they're talking about her being a POC from our real life point of view, not in the context of her own fictional world.

Please tell me this is so. ;__;

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
For some of them there's no difference.

oh ;____;

damn, this is why I prefer to stay in my little corners of fandom with just a handful of friends to squee with

There was a thread like this some days back right here on f!s where white people started educating Chinese(? they lived in Asia iirc) commenters on how they all wanted to be white because they were brainwashed by white media. The asian people were understandably surprised to hear that the white people believed that. I found the whole thing p. funny tbh.

So um, yeah. When people call any non-white character a POC it carries the unfortunate implication that they think anybody non-white anywhere is oppressed by white people regardless of the context the character is ICly in.

I agree with the comment below that there's a difference between calling Korra a "character of color" that we can all recognize is important from an audience perspective, and calling her a "person of color" when the idea of that doesn't even exist in her world.

perspective makes everything nice and cool c:

let's hope that it becomes contagious

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
who gives a fuck

if people want to identify with her as a POC then let them! Whatever reasons people have to draw on a character as a source of inspiration are none of your business. It has literally no negative impact on you whatsoever. None. Zilch. Zero.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't care if people identify with Korra. I care when people call Korra a "POC" and put her in the same group as me when she doesn't face any of the prejudices that I and other POC have to face on a daily basis. She doesn't go through anything I go through regarding race and social class and biases, but people think she represents people like me if you call her a POC. That affects me.

I can see why she's important as a character created in the context of a white-dominant culture. I'm not saying this isn't important. But in her world she's not a POC and if I don't identify with "Korra as a POC" then it has literally no negative impact on you whatsoever. None. Zilch. Zero.

this

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not about catering to whites. POC requires a white default. There is no white default in Korra's world. Her people are not an oppressed minority, which is an implication of POC. Korra's a dark-skinned, black-haired girl with blue eyes. Please find me a race of people where that description is the majority. You won't find one. The Water Tribe is not a real race.

Also, whites getting ninety-nine percent of the world? There's a whole mess of Asians who are fantastically rich or at a middle-class level. Get out a little.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Korra doesn't have black hair, she has brown hair, doesn't she?

But yeah. Water Tribe isn't a real race, etc.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
White people get ninety-nine percent of the world.

So true, except in Asia, Africa and South America. But that's just a small fraction.

Also, according toNational Geographic (http://globalpublicsquare.blogs.cnn.com/2011/03/17/what-the-average-joe-or-jane-really-looks-like/), given the population of the world, the most common face for a human being is Han Chinese.

But given how F!S is made up of a majority of white Americans, Canadians and Europeans, I can see how you would think this. Is it racist though? Yep. But I can see how you would think like that.

Holy shit, we're all Jet Li.

I know kung-fu.

Whoa.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-12 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
Except that white people also get preferential treatment in most asian countries.
