(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)How are we making it all about us? I'm a POC but I have plenty of white friends who refer to her (and other characters from that universe) as POCs so...
I don't understand what you're reaching for, OP.
and yes, maybe for once the pocs would like it to be all about us

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)Art always imitates life. There is always a reflection of real life struggles in fiction, and race and ethnicity are no exception.
She might not be a minority in her world in the same way she would be in certain parts of our world in real life, but calling her a POC for context in more meta/stepping-back-and-looking-at-the-context-in-real-life-the-story-causes kind of discussions makes perfect sense to me.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)However, in terms of how Korra IS a PoC, and the importance and implications of what that has in a cartoon, in our world, and why it is significant that she IS a POC? No, totally legit to call her that. Because it IS something to be noted.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)Korra is a CoC - character of color. It's important and significant the she's a non-white lead of a Western show, because of the outside cultural context in which the show exists.
Korra is not a PoC - person of color. Within her universe there's no stigma against her for the group she was born and raised a part of.
If that makes any sense.

Also, LOL at the people who call Korra a POC without using the same term for ANY OF THE OTHER CHARACTERS IN THE AVATAR UNIVERSE.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)Just plain awesome :X
(Also, there are no caucasians in avatar, EVERYONE is based on a different non-caucasian race/culture. So it's kind of redundant to call her POC, yeah)

However, I think it should be noted that her skin tone isn't white. Having characters who look like POCs, even though they may not face the same discrimination, is a step in the right direction of getting POC on television and movies.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)It's actually kind of fun to make up mixes for the characters.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)When they start making ethnic characters look like the ethnicity they're purporting to use a fantasized real world culture of instead of idealized white features with a faintly darker skin tone, then maybe. You know, not ignoring all the characteristics that mainstream US culture finds 'not as attractive', like broader or larger noses and different facial shapes and such.
But seriously? Korra looks about as Ethnic as I do and I'm an Irish-descended white girl that can tan.

Either way it this secret is totally dumb. People are talking about her in the context where the audience sees a leading character that for once isn't fair/pale/white/etc, which seems simple enough to me? don't go losing your head with the semantics...

If POC were the stars of many children and teen shows then I could see how it would make you uncomfortable, but that's not how it is right now.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 01:56 am (UTC)(link)Korra's basically an alien that somehow wound up with a race that doesn't match any of ours, an alien that's been treated as an alien with an alien culture inspired by our cultures rather than stolen wholesale from white Americans with the idea that that's just how everyone is.
It's surprising! People want to talk about it!
Yes, POC in this case means "not white". Maybe we should switch to "White non-default" or something. But there's a difference between talking about why make-believe characters wind up looking a certain way and trying to make yourself the center of attention.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 09:57 am (UTC)(link)On a totally related note though, I had to think really hard if I had any friends who were poc. And I really had to think about it.
It's because I don't have friends who I think of in terms of white or poc. Isn't this 2012? Why is there this them versus us mentality?
Now I'm reading about white privilege. Is there a poc privilege equivalent?
I think I like being color/race/ethnicity/nationality blind. *crawls back under internet rock*

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 11:08 am (UTC)(link)I think because around here it would be very offensive to call some POC or person of colour. The social preferences where I live is to call people black, white, indigenous/X heritage if you can, darker etc
I thought POC meant piece of crap and I was very confused about why people were being so rude about others until I saw it mentioned with a descriptor
