Does it make you uncomfortable that Korra is a POC? Do you not want to acknowledge that fact about her?
How are we making it all about us? I'm a POC but I have plenty of white friends who refer to her (and other characters from that universe) as POCs so...
I don't understand what you're reaching for, OP.

and yes, maybe for once the pocs would like it to be all about us

what a dumb secret

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Fictional stories do not exist in a vacuum -- not even if they're set in a fantasy world.

Art always imitates life. There is always a reflection of real life struggles in fiction, and race and ethnicity are no exception.

She might not be a minority in her world in the same way she would be in certain parts of our world in real life, but calling her a POC for context in more meta/stepping-back-and-looking-at-the-context-in-real-life-the-story-causes kind of discussions makes perfect sense to me.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"POC" is a loaded term in real life, sure, but you can't deny that Korra is a person of color. She may come from a fantasy world, but one would never hesitate to call, say, a white princess form a medieval story "white". POC can and should refer to characters who reflect their appearances POC. Otherwise you are taking away a lot. I want to see a character who looks like me and call them what they are, not be forced to "share" their POC status with white people since it's a fantasy world. /on meds and unable to articulate stuff very well

Characters of color exist even in fiction. Is it really raining so hard on your fandom parade if, for once, things are about POC instead of being all about whites or catering to whites? White people get ninety-nine percent of the world, you don't need to begrudge the crumbs thrown the way of POC.

Within the terms of her own universe, I can see the issue, mostly because their world is defined by the tribe you come from.

However, in terms of how Korra IS a PoC, and the importance and implications of what that has in a cartoon, in our world, and why it is significant that she IS a POC? No, totally legit to call her that. Because it IS something to be noted.

To me:

Korra is a CoC - character of color. It's important and significant the she's a non-white lead of a Western show, because of the outside cultural context in which the show exists.

Korra is not a PoC - person of color. Within her universe there's no stigma against her for the group she was born and raised a part of.

If that makes any sense.

Whether she's a POC or not, I don't know why the hell we can't just have characters. To me she's just Korra.

Also, LOL at the people who call Korra a POC without using the same term for ANY OF THE OTHER CHARACTERS IN THE AVATAR UNIVERSE.

Kind of related....but today's new episode of Korra...

Just plain awesome :X

(Also, there are no caucasians in avatar, EVERYONE is based on a different non-caucasian race/culture. So it's kind of redundant to call her POC, yeah)

I kinda agree with you. I think the issues have gotten muddle up. As a character in her universe, no she is not a POC. She doesn't face the prejudices that people in worlds where they are minorities face. Frankly, as the Avatar, she's got more privilege than anyone in some respects.

However, I think it should be noted that her skin tone isn't white. Having characters who look like POCs, even though they may not face the same discrimination, is a step in the right direction of getting POC on television and movies.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
What I find odd when it comes to Korra ethnicity and the Avatar world in general is how so many people want to put the characters in one box or another. Like Korra can only be one thing, like if she were real she could only be Indian because of her skin color or Inuit because of her cultural background. I find it odd because in the world of Avatar, animals are sorts of mixes, well, except for that bear and that was considered odd. So, why can't people be mixed too? Like for me, Korra in real life would be a mixture of Inuit, Indian, Ethiopian, Chinese and Swedish. Not just one thing but a whole mess of groups. Or Bolin and Mako would be Chinese, Korean, Irish and Scottish.

It's actually kind of fun to make up mixes for the characters.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry, but this is an incredibly stupid secret. Within Korra's fictional world, the term PoC might not have meaning or it might not have the same meaning, but as a work of fiction created in this world, showing characters who break the standard fantasy mold of white and pseudo European (and often still white even if the world isn't Europeanesque)is important and worth recognizing.

I was just reading about how Korra is a privileged bender and how she's a spoiled brat who doesn't know what it's like to be discriminated or something something, and how any good social justice supporter should take the side of the equalists or something. so now when I see this whole "Korra is a great character because she's a PoC lead!" I kinda get confused. are we suppose to like her for being PoC in OUR world or hate her for being privileged in HER world idk anymore

I really don't get where people are calling any of these characters people of color anyway. Putting ethnic clothes and a tan on a character with caucasian features does not a PoC make. And I never even thought Korra's skin was noticeably dark. She looks like a white girl with a tan.

When they start making ethnic characters look like the ethnicity they're purporting to use a fantasized real world culture of instead of idealized white features with a faintly darker skin tone, then maybe. You know, not ignoring all the characteristics that mainstream US culture finds 'not as attractive', like broader or larger noses and different facial shapes and such.

But seriously? Korra looks about as Ethnic as I do and I'm an Irish-descended white girl that can tan.

I personally hate the term "PoC" and that it's typically applied to anyone non-white. That just means there's white people, then everyone else, like we're some kind of blob. I don't think of myself as a PoC; I think of myself as Pakistani. /vaguely related comment is vaguely related

I always figured that when people says she's a PoC they mean "she's not white" instead of "she's opressed and a minority". Odd. =|

Either way it this secret is totally dumb. People are talking about her in the context where the audience sees a leading character that for once isn't fair/pale/white/etc, which seems simple enough to me? don't go losing your head with the semantics...

You're taking it the wrong way. POC are excited to see a brown-skinned girl as the star of a popular show because it's so uncommon. They love Korra for being Korra, they're not shallow, and they shouldn't have to hide their excitement because you "just want her to be Korra of the Southern Water Tribe."

If POC were the stars of many children and teen shows then I could see how it would make you uncomfortable, but that's not how it is right now.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
I belong to a sci-fi fandom with a large cast of alien characters. Almost all of them look 100% like white humans. No one in the series itself would know or care what a POC is because it's the future and racism is over and they're beyond that. But the creators and audience aren't. Why do all the aliens look human? Why do they all look white?

Korra's basically an alien that somehow wound up with a race that doesn't match any of ours, an alien that's been treated as an alien with an alien culture inspired by our cultures rather than stolen wholesale from white Americans with the idea that that's just how everyone is.

It's surprising! People want to talk about it!

Yes, POC in this case means "not white". Maybe we should switch to "White non-default" or something. But there's a difference between talking about why make-believe characters wind up looking a certain way and trying to make yourself the center of attention.

She IS Korra of the Southern Tribe. She's Korra of the Southern Water Tribe who is not descended from a fantasy analogue of the historical racial majorities of Western Europe, which is so rare in Western fiction as to be highly notable. People who are also not descended from the historical racial majorities of Western Europe are happy about this. Leave them alone.

I can sort of understand what you're saying. I'm sure that this isn't at all the point you're trying to make, but it really bothers me when people try to slap the PoC label (with all of the "nuances" of " typical PoC" behavior/clothing/problems) onto characters and then get mad at people for failing to portray them in an "authentic" way. Because everybody knows that all PoC have the exact same skin tone, "ethnic" clothing, and PoC problems, right?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 09:57 am (UTC)(link)
I had to look up poc >>.

On a totally related note though, I had to think really hard if I had any friends who were poc. And I really had to think about it.

It's because I don't have friends who I think of in terms of white or poc. Isn't this 2012? Why is there this them versus us mentality?

Now I'm reading about white privilege. Is there a poc privilege equivalent?

I think I like being color/race/ethnicity/nationality blind. *crawls back under internet rock*

I only ever read the term POC online. I've never heard it in real life. I think it may be more of an american term?

I think because around here it would be very offensive to call some POC or person of colour. The social preferences where I live is to call people black, white, indigenous/X heritage if you can, darker etc

I thought POC meant piece of crap and I was very confused about why people were being so rude about others until I saw it mentioned with a descriptor
