Whether she's a POC or not, I don't know why the hell we can't just have characters. To me she's just Korra.

Also, LOL at the people who call Korra a POC without using the same term for ANY OF THE OTHER CHARACTERS IN THE AVATAR UNIVERSE.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
There are other characters in the Avatar universe? :V

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
People talk about her because she's the lead, but from a visual/racial/given-this-is-a-western-show perspective, then yeah, I'd call just about all the characters in the avatar universe PoC, and i've heard others do the same, especially back during the racebending/whitewashing debacle with the movie.

Also, acknowledging that ethnicity is important (albeit in different ways) both to characters in universe and to the audience in context doesn't detract from their being individuals. It informs it. Why do people always wail about just characters as if she's somehow less of a person if we describe her?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Because you're singling her out? I know it's important to have more non-white leads in western shows, but isn't it also counter-productive to single characters out instead of just treating it as something that should be normal? IDK

But it's not normal. That's the whole point. There are so few leading characters of color in media, especially in animation, that it is exceptional.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Perhaps we should stop treating it like it's exceptional and just start expecting it.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Because if you treat every single instance of a PoC that way, when will it ever start being normal?

[personal profile] yeahscience 2012-06-09 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe when there's more than a handful of them?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
No one in the avatar series is white-Why start now with the "OMG COLORED MC :D" when Aang is asian. And the rest of the cast is also PoC. Honestly, if -anyone- is treated poorly in this series it's the PoNB. People Of Non Bending. LOL.

1) People did talk about this with Aang A LOT, I don't know if you just missed it or something? Especially when the movie came out (which in fact, proved the necessity of talking about this stuff, since the first thing they did was whitewash the fuck out of it).

2) Yes, but there are other shows/films with largely POC casts that still have white heroes (like THE AIRBENDER MOVIE). Also, Korra is very visibly dark-skinned, as opposed to Aang and many of the other characters.

Thank you.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Someone sounds white

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
THANK YOU! I was saying this above.

Seriously though, it's probably because POC=African American and SJW just like to pretend that it includes everyone who isn't white. They couldn't care less that the show's universe is populated entirely by people of Asian appearance, but give them someone with dark skin? Suddenly it's SUPER IMPORTANT THAT SHE IS A POC OMG!

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
Is this sarcasm? Because POC absolutely does not mean only African-American irl. Also, I'm pretty sure no one's convinced Korra's black. The issue is more whether she's a fantasy race, Inuit/Eskimo, or white (for the dumbasses).

Here's the Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Person_of_color

Otherwise, I agree that it's really stupid that Korra's darker skin makes her super important. Unless there are a fuckload of Inuit/Eskimos out there who are coming out of the woodwork to take joy in a girl who kind of looks like them. Which would actually be awesome.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 10:43 am (UTC)(link)
then why isn't this hoopla going on about any other character in the show? or hey, about Aang in Avatar? when ATLA originally came out it didn't seem revolutionary that the main character was clearly modeled after a Tibetan monk. It wasn't revolutionary then that the main character was "POC" (it took the movie mess for people to care about it at all).

In Legend of Korra it somehow doesn't seem revolutionary that the chief of police is Chinese or that the richest man around is Japanese or anything else. the only thing that matters? "OMG KORRA IS A POC U GUYS"!!!

Ergo, I conclude that POC=people with dark skin and that the official definition only exists so that people who use the term can pretend that they aren't racist and only care about people with dark skin.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-12 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Because Aang had this argument too, complete with racist shits like you claiming he shouldn't be considered a PoC because "he is white". You lying about it doesn't change that.

I love the butthurt from you people, though. Having to acknowledge that PoC exist sucks for you, huh? Poor kid.
