I had to look up poc >>.

On a totally related note though, I had to think really hard if I had any friends who were poc. And I really had to think about it.

It's because I don't have friends who I think of in terms of white or poc. Isn't this 2012? Why is there this them versus us mentality?

Now I'm reading about white privilege. Is there a poc privilege equivalent?

I think I like being color/race/ethnicity/nationality blind. *crawls back under internet rock*

Except being 'blind' doesn't help anyone but yourself.

There is current research that people who declare themselves colorblind are often pretty racist themselves, whether they noticed it or not because you do see and interpret race.

Well. I guess I'm racist then. I wonder if I'm racist against white people or poc. I'm a Japanese-Irish woman (I look more like my mother, so I guess I could pass for a white person). Now I'm all sorts of conflicted.

So...do I announce I'm racist in conversation? Do poc announce their poc in conversation? Do people (I'm assuming it's not PC to say "white people"...since I'm racist, should I care?) of non-color announce their colorless in conversation?

What about heterosexuality? Homosexuality? Why should anyone care what color someone is or is not? Why should anyone care about what sexuality someone is?

What about education?

Okay, I get this is media's reflection on society. I turned on the TV just now and there are at least two shows on that have protagonists in high school. Are higher education students or working adults feeling oppressed because there aren't any "real" representations of them in these shows? No, hell no. I can't really comment on color, because I don't see any poc, really.

Sounds like you may need to do some more reading.

The 'us versus them' mentality still exists because racial inequities still exist. Minorities are still at a disadvantage, and pretending otherwise doesn't benefit anyone. People shouldn't be seen as 'just' their race, but their race often dictates or influences their experiences throughout life, how other people respond to them, how they're represented in the media, etc...The challenges they face need to be acknowledged.

So how can minorities get an advantage? Why is it fair for a minority to have an advantage? Shouldn't everyone have an equal opportunity?

I probably do need to do more reading, though. But I can't see how color blindness is wrong. I mean, it's not a long term solution, but I think it's a start in the correct direction for color equality and teaching against them vs us.

DA

In general, color blindness is condescending. You don't *actually* not notice a person's skin color, or you would literally be blind. It's often a shorthand of 'Look at me, I'm progressive, give me a cookie!' And it makes you not notice that you sometimes treat PoCs differently. It also ignores that if you're white (or pass for white, in your case?), you get benefits as person who doesn't pass for white does not receive. Google 'Why is not seeing color' bad' or a similar phrase for more people to explain it.

As for 'advantage' - no one said minorities should be advantaged over non-minorities. You jumped straight to that from someone bringing up how they're disadvantaged. The fact that you headed straight there is a sign you really need to examine what you actually think about minorities.

Try doing a google search for racism 101. Sounds like you might need it. (This is not a snarky comment, btw. It just sounds like you don't have a firm grasp on the generally accepted 'basics', so it'll be easier to talk in communities like these with a better understanding).
