I really don't get where people are calling any of these characters people of color anyway. Putting ethnic clothes and a tan on a character with caucasian features does not a PoC make. And I never even thought Korra's skin was noticeably dark. She looks like a white girl with a tan.

When they start making ethnic characters look like the ethnicity they're purporting to use a fantasized real world culture of instead of idealized white features with a faintly darker skin tone, then maybe. You know, not ignoring all the characteristics that mainstream US culture finds 'not as attractive', like broader or larger noses and different facial shapes and such.

But seriously? Korra looks about as Ethnic as I do and I'm an Irish-descended white girl that can tan.

When you spend enough time watching animated media where almost every woman is the palest blonde person you could ever imagine, a "white girl with a tan" (lol, I grew up with a lot of light-skinned, straight-haired, narrow-nosed yet obviously black and Latina girls who would be very upset if someone ever called them white) is a breath of fresh air. Korra is a step in the right direction and unlike you, some people don't have the privilege to reject every positive advance until animators get it perfect. Any character with dark skin who isn't a blackface stereotype is happy day for me.

Thanks so much for this comment. A someone who isn't white but has straight hair and lighter olive skin, I've been side eyeing some of these comments so hard.

What people need to realize, is that Korra is significant to us in the real world. Rarely do we see someone who is gay or someone who has darker skin as a main lead of a mainstream show. Let alone a mainstream show that's in a sci-fi or fantasy genre. Sure, it happens, but it's a lot rarer than the typical straight white male main lead that is in SO MANY action movies, fantasy novels, etc.

Good for you maam. That doesn't make Korra "a white girl with a tan", not to mention I have plenty of friends who would be offended if people called them "white girls with tans" -blue eyes and green eyes included. plus korra's parents? Yeah.

Anyone time someone says this "argument" I realise they're an idiot and not worth my time.

Korra is a stylized cartoon character. She doesn't look particularly not-white, but she doesn't look particularly white either. Heck, Korra's face doesn't even look particularly female or male! Mostly she just looks generically human. The Avatar style... isn't really realistic enough to accurately portray race, except for a few characters like Lin who look more distinctly Asian.

With most of the characters? If you were given a line drawing of them in their underwear, you could pretty much go wild with a paint bucket and make them any colour you wanted to and it wouldn't really look off.

Hi Riley. You are still being retarded, I see.
