"POC" is a loaded term in real life, sure, but you can't deny that Korra is a person of color. She may come from a fantasy world, but one would never hesitate to call, say, a white princess form a medieval story "white". POC can and should refer to characters who reflect their appearances POC. Otherwise you are taking away a lot. I want to see a character who looks like me and call them what they are, not be forced to "share" their POC status with white people since it's a fantasy world. /on meds and unable to articulate stuff very well

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
So every japanese anime character is a POC? This reasoning makes zero sense.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Anime is on a whole different real life cultural context than "western" works, don't pretend it's the same to start wank.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol, not to hear the SJWs preach it.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
..So whether or not a fictional character is a PoC depends upon the nationality of the person who wrote it.

Gotcha.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 08:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, actually, kind of. If a Japanese person is writing about Japanese people in Japan, they're not writing about POCs. If an American person is writing about Japanese people in America, then they are writing about POCs.

yes, exactly. anime characters who are meant to be japanese people aren't white!!

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a pretty fucked up statement. Korra's Water Tribe. It's a fantasy race with dark skin, black hair, and blue eyes. That doesn't represent a race in the real world. Why are you so insistent on creating this divide in a world where it doesn't exist?

And no, I wouldn't call a fantasy princess from a medieval story "white". What the hell are you even talking about?

It sounds like you have some serious hatred of white people.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
da but lmao what the fuck are you on about

how did anything in their comment translate to you as "I HATE WHITE PEOPLE RAAAAAAAAAAA"

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
...? If it is a story set in medieval Europe and there is no indication that the character is not other than white, why wouldn't you...?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
The original anon said medieval and that anon thought they meant fantasy medieval afaik. There'd be a difference if it's a fantasy world.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably Lord of the Rings or fiction along the same vein.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Paging, Merlin. Merlin, this courtesy thread.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually no. Some people of mixed Polynesian descent do have dark skin, black hair, and blue eyes JSYK. As a mixed raced person myself, and growing up in Hawaii where it's not uncommon for hapas to look mixed, this kind of description isn't all that unusual.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
I did not say "no people exist who have these traits". I said "find me a race where this is the majority".

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, jeez, sorry, realized I said that in a different comment. The Water Tribe has a majority of people with dark skin, black hair, and blue eyes. These traits are not the traits of a majority of any race. Ergo, they do not represent a real race.

Dark skin and black hair are an extremely common combination. The problem here is blue eyes, which only exist in 2.2% of the human population. Blue eyes are a polygenic trait that function a lot like recessive traits. They are common along the Baltic Sea and Northern Europe, though they are also commonly found in Eastern, Central, and Southern Europe, Western Asia, the Levant, and among Ashkenazi Jews. The farther you get from the Baltics, though, the lower the percentage of people with blue eyes (it has been theorized that a mutation among the peoples living along the Black Sea created blue eyes). This makes dark skin, black hair, and blue eyes an uncommon combination and certainly not one that exists as a majority in any race.

nayrt

Science?! In my f!s?!

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 10:15 am (UTC)(link)
I see someone has been using Wikipedia.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 10:17 am (UTC)(link)
Right because mixed race isn't a real race. We're like the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus!

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 11:11 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, we're MIXED race. ergo neither of us is exclusively one race as we are mixed.

Hence mixed race = mixed characteristics.

MIXED

signed
another mixed person.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Then EVERY character in Avatar and Legend of Korra is a POC. because none are "white". Why are you singling out Korra from everybody else?

If we can call a white character white then we should be able to call a dark brown character dark brown, not "POC", especially in a context where "POC" refers to EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER OF THE SERIES.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so confused about this honestly. How was Aang not a POC? Do you have to have tan skin to be POC now? Why is this an issue all of a sudden?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-12 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
Because you racist people are making it an issue, perhaps?

If you wouldn't be so butthurt that Korra is rightfully considered POC, then there would be no issue.
