I'm pretty sure all kink memes degenerate into this at some point. Just guessing, but I'd say it has something to do with diminishing returns or cycles or something; fans make kink memes to read porn of their characters, and new people discover the kink memes before the actual media. Those people begin writing and reading at the meme, and that draws in new people who've never seen the source material or don't really care for it much. And the cycle just repeats.

We're also between seasons in Sherlock, I think fanwork often peters out in both quantity and quality when there's no new canon to work off of, This isn't always the case, but [shrug] it's a thought.

I think this is definitely part of the problem for Sherlock fandom. I remember after the first series there were a few months where I could barely keep up with fics and there was something new and interesting everyday, but then it slowly died out until it was just the kinkmeme or some chaptered AUs. I thought maybe this time we could keep the momentum going, but it looks like it's happening again. I just think most people move on after a while only to come back for new canon, like I did.

And kinkmemes, from what I've seen of them, go through phases of their own. The Sherlock one was pretty massive and has lasted a very long time *and* there are lots of fanworks outside of the meme, so it kind of makes sense that it's 'dying'.

Yeah, even joining in early 2011, I found the were so many posts on sherlockbbc, I made a filter on my Friends Page on LJ so the posts there would stop pushing content from my other Friends off the first page of my flist... O_O

I just think most people move on after a while only to come back for new canon, like I did.

Yeah... Though in same ways it's nice; I can focus on other things.

I've seen that happen in most kink memes/fandoms, especially in larger fandoms

Stopped following the Sherlock kink meme a while back because I couldn't keep up, but there were a lot of alarmingly similar prompts, so...I don't really regret it. But like others have said, it happens to most kink meme's at some point, and we are on 'off season', so maybe things will be different once the series returns.

I'll just say it; I believe I've seen fandom kink memes colonised by people who aren't interested in the fandom per se but have specific kinks they want to get off on, and I don't know what's going down in Sherlock but I think I've watched two other big kink memes get colonised by pedophiles.

I'm thinking it's because there's so little source material and anything canon-related has already been ficced in just about every way imaginable. So people have wildly branched out into AUs.

I mean, there's only so many times I can read Sherlock and John's post-Reichenbach reunion. I'm actually a bit tired of them. Personally I prefer to read a fic where they're, say, turtles or something just because it's different.

Of course, give me an in-character case fic and I'd be all over that! But those fics are very rare.

I don't know; I've been finding some pretty good prompts on the meme. I guess it all depends on what you're looking for; I like writing crack and humor and au and there's been plenty of prompts for that. . .then again, I do understand what OP is saying because I do skim for that sort of thing and about 75 percent of the kinkmeme lately has been abusefic/omegaverse/non con. . .but also in my mind about 75 percent of the kinkmeme always has been stuff that I want to shield my eyes from, so I guess I just didn't notice.

I wonder the same thing myself, why do they even bother with the source material if all they're going to do is make the characters so grossly OOC in order to fit to the kinks they want to write about/draw about? It just baffles me.

uh what? i don't think anybody who writes rpf feels morally superior to those who don't. they just don't feel morally inferior. there's nothing wrong with it and there's nothing wrong with using characters to explore your kinks. seriously, get some perspective.

No, I meant the people who are all over RPF talking about how disgusting and creepy it is are the ones who feel morally superior while doing pretty much the same thing but using the character names.
