I love listening to Gregorian Chants. ♥____♥

Any recs?

Also, if you feel that guilty about it* have you tried listening to the band Gregorian? They do Gregorian chant versions of secular music, like Metallica's Nothing Else Matters.

*I don't think that you should? Because it's inspiration, which is good, but I'm not you and all that. :)

Is this going to turn into a recs thread? OK, cool. Here's an excellent rendition of Dies Irae: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fMHms5Cvsw

Sorta Gregorian chants with new agey elements -- Lesiem.

The band Era might be worth looking into. I've listened to them on youtube several times and they are one of my favorites.

This is one of my favorite secrets EVER!!! Good for you for finding inspiration where you can!

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, you rebel.

I'm an atheist who listens to *and sings* early Christian, Jewish, and Muslim music. I think I win.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a Jewish girl who sings in concerts for elderly Jews, and let me tell you that they appreciate "Ave Maria" greatly as a work of art. We are a cultured people, anon, and there's no shame in viewing a religious work as just art.

(Incidentally I am obsessed with the song "Jesus Take the Wheel" even though I feel really guilty whenever I play it.)

It's cool bro. I'm a Jew and I love Skillet. At least Gregorian chants have artistic merit. :P

I (a Christian) don't really think that's blasphemy. It's just music. I don't worship music; I worship God.

Of course your perspective is very different - just my $0.02.

Christians do call this sort of music "sacred," but that's only because it talks about sacred stuff. The music isn't actually sacred itself. Jesus didn't know anything about chant, after all. (Though I do know people who will swear up and down that Handel's Messiah is divinely Inspired.;) And it's not like only Christians are allowed to listen to Christian music. It's a religion that supposed to be shared (with the understanding that not everyone is going to like it or you for sharing it, obvs, but still).

So, no. Not blasphemy. Not even close. :D

I love Gregorian Chants

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha wut? How is it "ten kinds of blasphemy"? Where are the rules that Jews aren't allowed to listen to other individuals worshiping in another religion? And why would it be especially bad because you're writing fanfiction? Are you doing some sort of Moses/Hashem OTP slash?

Stop trying to find stuff to make yourself guilty over and just rock out to some awesome chants, dude.

Are you doing some sort of Moses/Hashem OTP slash?

My mind immediately went back to the time TV Tropes has a 'Troper Tales' for their Rule 34 page; specifically the part where everyone was talking about God/Jesus/Muhammad/John/Satan and just about any pairing under the sun. X(

You're not going to find any judgement here, OP! I'm an agnostic and I find Gregorian Chant some of the most beautiful and inspiring music in the world. (Also, it's not from the same compositional era at all, but Palestrina's music is sublime and I highly recommend it for inspiration). I'm doing it wrong, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
OP, I'm not Christian at all (bordering on atheist these days), but I listened to Gregorian chants and Hildegard of Bingen while I was in labor and when I write fanfic. Appreciating gorgeous/amazing music isn't blasphemous on any level!

(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
I listen to Gregorian chants all the time when writing too and I'm Jewish. It shouldn't matter what you listen to. Inspiration is inspiration.

Try Paul & Storm's "Nun Fight." That should get you up to twelve kinds of blasphemy, which is where I think it wraps around and becomes okay again.

[personal profile] zogblaster 2012-06-12 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I'm confused in what way this could at all be considered blasphemous? While it is sacred music, it is being made deliberately available to you to listen to. You're not doing anything to the music or words, except listen to them.
