How are you mostly white if you're half black?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I figured she was light-skinned enough not to be read as a black person on sight.

This woman has a black mother...

I don't know, doesn't it take more that just a skin colour to "be black"? If OP had a white upbringing, it makes sense that she doesn't identify as black all that much.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
omg, you can't just ask someone why they're white.

Best comment. EVER.

Awesome, LOL!

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Because genetics. My great-grandfather was a poc; but my dad was basically a blonde white child. There seems to be this notion that if you have any black blood you MUST be dark, but really: many genes code for skin color, and it is indeed possible that those of the white parent take the upper hand.

Seems like a pretty damn good reason, honestly. There's a part of your past you want to know more about and feel an identity with, and valid reasons for you to do so.

Ignore social justice warriors who tell you not to feel what you feel. I hope you find some of the answers you are looking for someday, OP

Your self-identification has to do with your own decision, not what other people tell you.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Whether or not you identify as black yourself, or pass, or whatever, I don't think anyone can legitimately fault you for seeking connections with your father.

There's nothing wrong with relating with a character even when you don't identify the same way. After all, in America most people despite what they identify as, are asked to relate to mostly white characters in media. It's also very sweet to feel that's a way of connecting with your father.

However it becomes really tricky when people start acting, dressing, and talking like the characters they like. That could be a good or a bad thing, depending on the circumstances.

I don't see anything wrong with that.

My guy is kinda the same - his grandfather was an Arab so he really loves getting into stuff with Arab characters.

How is that racist? You are both black and white no one says you have to be just one or the other. Identify with whoever you want OP.

Completely agree with this. I can't even fucking count how many times I've been told by some idiot that I have to choose to be black OR white, I can't be both. Well, no, I'm NOT going to choose, because I'm neither black nor white: I'm both, I'm proud of it, that's who I am, and that's who I identify as. OP shouldn't have to pretend to be anything other than what s/he is.

Oh my God, I can completely empathize with this. I'm the EXACT same way. My dad is black too (while my mom is white), and even though I'm mulatto, I've always felt more attached to black male characters than any others because of my dad. Don't feel bad for it, OP. This doesn't make you racist at ALL, and people who think that probably can't understand where you're coming from.

(I've been told this is racist, but I can't help it - when a male PoC dies in a movie, it makes me so much more sad than when a Caucasian male dies in a movie, because I can't help but think of my dad.)

my eight year old nephew has a white mother and a black father. his skin is light but his dad is his hero and he wished on his birthday candles he could be dark like his dad. the next day he discovered a little mole on his arm and thought it was working.
I guess this isn't really related I just wanted to share that story.
