It's not about not wanting to feel vulnerable, it's about poking something with a stick and watching to see what it does.

The funny thing is nobody even notices or cares whether secrets are trolls or not unless they're blatant. Whatever they say, somebody has prob said it before. No troll is going to out-do genuinely fucked-up fandom shit like CC or Victoria Bitter.

If you poke something with a stick it's going to be unhappy. The more you poke it with a stick, the more unhappy it will be.
I don't see why this apparently needs so many people testing it.

That's a strange logical jump to make. Not everything reacts to being poked exactly the same way every time. It also depends on the type of stick you use, how hard you poke, where you poke, and so forth. You've never laughed when poked in the side? You must be a very serious person. Trolling can be subtle and complex and entertaining as well as stupid and childish. It's not always done to purposely harm others.

To be honest a vast majority of the time it is done to harm others, but that's not the point.

Maybe it's just a personal preference... I mean, yes, I might laugh if someone pokes me, but I'd much rather laugh because of the situation, not out of an instinctual response.

But I also have very strong feelings towards manipulation of any kind, even if it's for 'good' reasons. So that's probably part of it. I just don't think it's necessary. Why manufacture and manipulate a situation when you could just come right out and talk about the issue?

Also, I apparently have more feels on this than I thought, lol.

Maybe OP has no interesting issues to talk about so they make some up for fun. Being so strongly against being taken for a fool harmlessly over a fandomsecret is... strange to me tbh. Does it hurt you so much that maybe you believed somebody hated Avengers for reasons!! when they actually loved it?

Well it's not like I'd feel BETRAYED or anything. I wouldn't say it'd hurt me, either.
I think it just frustrates because I don't understand what the point is. What are they trying to accomplish? What's the end goal? How is it more productive then just talking about your actual feelings on the movie? What's the point in making up fake opinions?

Maybe I am just really serious about some things. I don't know.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Entertainment. Some people just like seeing how others react to things. Maybe you've never wondered how somebody would react if told a certain thing? I find that odd, but not everyone is you nor is everyone me.

Productive has no bearing here. How do you define productive? If you want to know how fs would react to somebody saying they hated Avengers and you gain that knowledge by making a troll secret, that is, for you, productive. If you don't want to talk about your feelings on Avengers, then talking about them would not be productive for you. Others would argue that talking about fictional universes either way is not productive at all whatsoever.

As far as a fake fandomsecret goes, I'd say it's very harmless.

Yep this. As a former troll, I stuck to posting really stupid secrets that only made the most uptight in fandom butthurt. The rest played along and lol'd. Same with writing trollfics back in the day.

People post troll secrets here all the time, and I everything's still fine

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Alternatively, some of my very real secrets have been accused of being troll secrets, while I I never post anything just for the sake of trolling. I might spice it up at best, or muddle details to hide my identity - but they're always true.

"poking something with a stick and watching to see what it does"

You mean like a five year old?
