Agreed. I'd only start judging someone if they started acting like they really "knew" the characters just from fanfic without ever seeing/reading anything of the actual canon. Yes it's true in some cases that's just not possible but you still shouldn't act like you really know the characters - because you don't.

Those are rare cases though, like some game that'd cost too much to import. In which case odds are good another fan did anyway and you could still get exposure. Or at least watch youtube videos!

Edit: And even then, it's different if a person CAN'T play the game/etc. The ones I judge harshly are the ones that have that opportunity and don't take it.

Tangentially related, but I gave up on Harry Potter & The Methods of Rationality when I realized that the author had read, at most, up to book three but pretended he knew the story better than Rowling herself. Agh, such entitlement!
