Interesting that you mention competitive Magic. Some people have told me (as a YGO player) that some MTG players can be very elitist (like, that they play a ~real TCG or something, idk? one friend told me he thought MTG players thought of themselves as partaking in a "higher echelon" of card-gaming.)

Do you think there's some truth to that? Just curious. I'm not really interested in getting into MTG (mainly because it reminds me of my recent ex, and also because it's hella expensive compared to YGO); I'm just wondering.

I wouldn't say that... It's just the people that take it really seriously tend to be... well... weird. Really.

Which is unfortunate because it's actually a pretty bad ass card game.
Also, being a girl at an MTG event tends to be pretty awkward. It's like suddenly realizing that people view you as a unicorn.

Oh goodness, THIS.

There's a kid who comes with her dad where I play and it's become obvious to me that he's flat out told her to trade on being A Girl to get away with stuff. Didn't work on me. Being a girl myself, I'm not going to be so wowed that she can play that I'll forget to hold her to the actual rules.

Speaking as someone who's recently gotten back into MTG after fifteen years out? Serious MTG players can be total jackasses about the game. I've been going to a local game store to play on Friday nights and some nights I have fun and some nights it's like someone sucked all the joy out of the store before I walked in. And it's not just an attitude towards other card games (though I did get treated to a lovely diatribe on how MTG is superior to every game ever made and requires a higher IQ to play than chess and therefore the players are more awesome than anyone else). There's also some bizarre stratification within MTG playing itself. There are the drafters and the EDH/Commander players, the standard players, the unlimited players, etc. And each group has at least a handful of people who look down on all other formats and the people who play them.

In short, it's ridiculous. If I didn't enjoy the game as much as I do, I'd skip out, but I don't have the circle of casual playing friends I had in high school, so it's the game store and risk the elitists being there or it's going online, which just isn't as much fun.

I've seen all of that too, but the thing is? All of that's everywhere. I can name examples of very similar attitudes in fandom, too.

Geeks Humans just generally need to chill the fuck out, man.

Truer words and all that. I've seen it all over the place but usually I can find a corner full of like-minded people to have fun with in whatever fannish pursuit is at hand. MTG has been tricky.

I've seen people scoff about Yugioh. I've never understood why, really. I have never played Yugioh and don't really want to, but I can't imagine it's not fun, or is somehow devoid entirely of strategy, or whatever the hell people's beef with it is.
