Cosplay is made fun of a lot, but you're right it's not on level with LARPing. Maybe it's because for a lot of cosplayers it's just about the costume, but for LARPers it's a whole roleplaying intense adventure and dressing up? I don't know.

I don't know if it's linked, but in my one experience with LARPing (which was vampire LARPing - don't get me started), it's true that there were costumes, but they weren't really very good costumes.
For a fair amount of cosplayers there's an ideal of craftsmanship and skill that was lacking with the LARPers. Maybe that's an aspect of it?
It's a bunch of people wearing mediocre costumes and playing pretend...

As a larping girl from Europe I have to say that the craftsmanship in Larp is being held high as well. There's people stitching woodcarving, sewing (machine and hand depending on what one might go for), crafting their own weaponry (according to the rules so no one will get hurt) and with some who seem to nearly go into reenactment territory there also is a lot of research done.
(well, that's true with fantasy characters as well since ideally the costume should fit the character)

Though I do have to say that I mainly play low fantasy and know a few people who are just starting out with steam punk (one of them who build his own steampunk phone that actually connects to his mobile phone)
