Rec me some webcomics please~

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, so I've just discovered that webcomics are a thing (I know, I know, seriously late to the party). But I have no idea where to start. Rec me some, please? Bonus points for:

A) complete,
B) smart, and/or
C) gayness (male or female)

but they're not strictly necessary.

Recs, please?

Re: Rec me some webcomics please~

(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
These are two cute ones I've been enjoying. They don't really fit your bonus criteria (maybe smart) but still...

Plume - http://plumecomic.com/archive/the-boring-life-of-vesper-grey/

The Dreamer - http://thedreamercomic.com/comic.php?id=1

The Dreamer is a bit young at times, but it plays with history (specifically the American Revolution) so I forgive a lot. ;)

Re: Rec me some webcomics please~

(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh, thanks for the recs! I started Plume, and I was hooked from page one all the way through. I'm loving it to bits and pieces, and GRAAAR I want more! As for The Dreamer, I've only checked out the cover page, but is this a woman in my Revolutionary War?! I am officially psyched.

Thanks for the recs. If you've got any more, I'd love to hear them. <3

WITH PLEASURE

(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
1. Narbonic. Humor (geeky). Safe For Work. Complete. http://www.webcomicsnation.com/shaenongarrity/narbonic/series.php?view=archive&chapter=9763

Has a gay character later on, but that's not the focus. Mad Science! is the focus.

Black and white, simple art, newspaper comic format.

2. Gunnerkrigg Court. Urban Fantasy / Mystery. Safe For Work. On-going.

http://gunnerkrigg.com/index2.php

Has never missed an update (the author has a buffer of several strips to avoid that).

Art starts meh, but gets gorgeous later on. Good writing. Slow-going mysteries, with some adventure and humor. Main characters are schoolgirls. There is some ambiguous homosexuality between some characters later on, but it's probably okay that it remains ambiguous for the moment, considering how young they are (13-14 years old).

Full color pages.

Try to make it to the mid 10s chapters. If you still don't like it by then, it's not for you.

3. Order of the Stick. Dungeons & Dragons parody. Comedy and adventure. Safe for Work. On-going. Develops better, complex storylines later on.

http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0001.html

Full color. Stick figures art, but with surprisingly well done effects later on.

4. Girly. Humor through and through. Some action and lighthearted romance. Main pairing is two women. Occasionally Not Safe For Work. Complete.

http://girlyyy.com/go/1

Mostly black and white. Starts with simple, animesque (parody?) art, evolves into a Western Cartoon kind of style later on. The art improves over time. Best enjoyed if not taken seriously.

5. Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal. Humor (sometimes dark humor). Safe For Work. On-going.

http://www.smbc-comics.com/index.php

Color. Usually fairly short pages, with stand-alone jokes.

6. Flaky Pastry. Urban Fantasy. Humor. Lighthearted. A little adventure and romance. Mostly Safe For Work (heavy kissing, occasionally skimpiness in clothing, very rare). On-going.

http://flakypastry.runningwithpencils.com/comic.php?strip_id=0

Full color. Fairly gay-friendly. Not to be taken very seriously.

7. Demonology. Urban Fantasy. Slightly more serious. Safe For Work? Complete?

http://faith.rydia.net/

I only read the first "chapter", and forgot to continue. It's very plot-heavy, which is why I haven't picked it up yet again. The pages I read were in black and white, but fairly good. It was interesting.

8. Minus. Surreal Fantasy? Kind of odd, but mostly lighthearted (with some borderline horror). Safe For Work. Complete.

http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus1.html

Cute artwork. Mostly stand alone pages, but there are some stories that continue in 2-5ish pages. It's adorable when it's not being weird or scary.

9. 8-bit Theather. Fantasy. Parody / Humor. Dark humor, mostly. Safe For Work. On-going?

http://www.nuklearpower.com/2001/03/02/episode-001-were-going-where/

THIS COMIC, MERCY. I've never been able to catch-up. It's very long.

It has sprite art from the Final Fantasy videogame, but it's used very cleverly as the story advances.

10. Looking For Group. Fantasy. Humor, but sometimes serious. Adventure. Safe For Work, with some exceptions for violence. On-going.

http://www.lfgcomic.com/page/1

I fell behind, but I remember liking it very much. It's based on World of Warcraft, I think, but you don't need to know about the game to understand it.

Full color pages. On-going story. Fairly good artwork.

11. Unsounded. Fantasy. On-going. Safe For Work? Mystery?

http://www.casualvillain.com/Unsounded/comic/ch01/ch01_01.html

Gorgeous, gorgeous full-color artwork. I'm only in the first chapter, but definitely check it out.

12. Penny Arcade. Humor (dark humor, too, watch out for that). Parody. Videogames focused, mostly. On-going. Safe For Work.

http://penny-arcade.com/comic/2012/06/08

The artwork starts eh, but gets better. It's a joke-a-day comic, with a few exceptions.

The commentary in the "news" is sometimes so intellectual / technology oriented that it often goes over my head.

13. MS Paint Adventures. (Four stories: two complete, one abandoned, one on-going and near the end) Sometimes not very Safe For Work. Humor. Adventure.

http://mspaintadventures.com/

This one is an oddball. If you have lots of free time, check out Problem Sleuth or Jail break (both complete) and leave Homestuck for last.

It has very... self-satisfied humor, at times. The artwork is mostly simple, with rare color.

14. Go Get A Roomie. NSFW. Romance? On-going.

http://gogetaroomie.chloe-art.com/

This one I only followed for a while until I caught up, and then never checked back. It is sort of gay friendly? But I don't suggest you take it very seriously. Some parts made me go... uh, okay.

15. The Non-Adventures of Wonderella. SFW. Humor, Parody, Kind of cynical. On-going.

http://nonadventures.com/

The parodies of a super-heroine with questionable morals. Full-color pages. Mostly joke-a-page, but has recurring characters, so better check it out from the beginning.

16. Sandra and Woo. SFW. Humor. lighthearted. On-going

http://www.sandraandwoo.com/2008/10/19/a-sly-raccoon/

The life of a girl and her pet talking-raccoon. Good for some adorable or funny moments.

17. The Adventures of Dr. McNinja. SFW, except for some violent moments. Humor. Action. As over the top as over the top can get. On-going.

http://drmcninja.com/

It... has to be read to be believed. Starts black and white but becomes colored later on. Top-notch artwork.

18. True Magic. SFW. Fantasy. Some humor. On-going.

http://www.true-magic.com/view.php?id=1

It's a nice adventure/fantasy story in a world where a god's powers were abused by his followers and their descendants, and a group of commoners are now trying to even the playing field. It's fairly light-hearted.

19. The Meek. Adventure, Fantasy. On-going. NSFW by virtue of having a nudist main character. It is oddly done tastefully.

http://www.meekcomic.com/2009/01/01/chapter-1-page-1/

I haven't kept up, but man, is that artwork gorgeous and that world interesting! Do check it out. Full color pages.

20. String Theory. Science Fiction? Fantasy? On-going. SFW.

http://www.stringtheorycomic.com/

I didn't keep up with it, but it was interesting. It had the tagline "The rise and fall of a villain superstar".

Starts black and white, but moves to full color fairly soon.

21. What Birds Know. Fantasy. Mystery. Suspense. Safe For Work, except for one mild nudity scene. On-going, but almost finished.

http://fribergthorelli.com/wbk/

This one is a hesitant recommendation, not because it isn't good, but because the pacing is slooooow. If you don't have patience, don't even bother.

Full color pages. Fairly solid artwork.

22. The Abominable Charles Christopher. Kind of Fantasy? Adventure. SFW. On-going.

http://www.abominable.cc/2007/06/20/episode-1/

This one is a little odd, but enchanting. It has talking animals and a kind-hearted yeti as a protagonist.

Monochrome, but beautiful artwork.

23. Angel Moxie. SFW. Humor. Parody. Complete.

http://www.venisproductions.com/angelmoxie/index.php

A parody of magical girls anime. Fairly light-hearted and simple, and yet done with affection.

24. Hemlock. ????

http://hemlock.smackjeeves.com/comics/893745/0-00/

I keep meaning to check this one out and forgetting. It's haunting but gorgeous.

25. Sister Claire. Humor?

http://www.sisterclaire.com/comic/coming-soon/

Another one that I keep forgetting to check out. It looks fun.

26. Two Guys and Guy. Humor. Kind of cynical. On-going. SFW?

http://www.twogag.com/

It's mostly dark-ish humor, and yet it's funny.

27. Monster Pulse. Urban Fantasy. SFW. On-going.

http://www.monster-pulse.com/

It's fairly new, but fairly good. It's a slow going thing, but it's nice. Once you finish the first chapter, you ought to know whether it's for you or not.

Black and white.

and oh so many more. ;___; why are there so many comics in the internet how will I read them all oh oh oh

Re: WITH PLEASURE

Oh my goodness, that list 0.0 Such a huge selection!

I poked around a few of them at random, and there's some interesting stuff in there. I have no idea how I'm going to read them all, but I shall certainly try!

I've started on Gunnerkrigg Court, which I'm really liking it so far--it's so quirky! <3

Thanks for taking the time to put up such a long list with all those descriptions. I'll get through them all... eventually! ^^;

Re: WITH PLEASURE

(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
Gunnerkrigg Court is my personal favorite. <3

I made the list by going through my bookmarks and listing what I remember reading or finding curious.

I am so behind on my reading list, you have no idea. D:

Oh, and you're very welcome! ^^

You could maybe read one long, plot heavy comic and two or three gag-a-day comics at once (and by "at once", I mean as a batch, not as in, all in one go D:), so you don't feel overwhelmed, and only move on to the next plot heavy comic once you catch up or finish the archives of the first one. It's probably the least overwhelming way to pace yourself.

Seconding the Dr. McNinja rec. Absolutely hilarios, totally awesome. Oh! There's alt-text from about volume 3 on, so hover your mouse and check for it.

Girl Genius. About ten years or so of archives, so while it's still going (all these are, actually) it'll be a while before you catch up. SO smart and funny and creative.

Hijinks Ensue. Really awesome geeky comic. Mostly stand-alones but the author is experimenting with some story arcs. Also has a decent archive built up. Oh! Alt-text alert. Hover your mouse over the comic for extra goodies!

XKCD is another extremely smart, funny comic. Alt-text there too.

Oglaf. EXTREMELY NSFW but also really well done and usually pretty hilarious, if occasionally a bit warped. :D Also has alt-text. You know what, just double-check for alt-text in all of them. Dr. McNinja didn't do it right away but the rest either do from day one or haven't at all.

Shortpacked. Fun, funny, smart, totally gay-friendly. Has very well-rounded characters. Totally awesome.

The same author has another on-going series that's still relatively new (Dumbing of Age, and two completed comics, It's Walky and Joyce and Walky). All of them are basically about (mostly) the same characters, but in different situations (SP being about them being employed at a toy store, DoA being about them at college, etc etc. Great fun.

Um. What else? Girls With Slingshots is a great comic, also with prominent gay characters (again, very well written). Oh! You have to check out Hark, A Vagrant (again, very smart and absolutely hilarious and also Something Positive, which is also extremely gay-friendly and hilarious.

Also Wondermark is also awesome. And I think that's pretty much all of the ones I read regularly, although you may want to check out Sluggy Freelance (which I think has ended now and was very good) and User Friendly which is basically over, I think, but which still puts out the occasional stand-alone on the weekends.

Enjoy! :-)

Ooh, thanks!

XKCD is what alerted me to webcomics in general, and I think it's awesome, so the fact that it's mentioned gives me great hope for the rest of your list. ^^; I shall definitely be going through the rest of the list when I have the time!

You're quite welcome!

Heh, yes, I love XKCD. Do let me know what you think of the rest of them! :-)

Most of my recs have been covered. I'd just like to second Order of the Stick, and Gunnerkrigg Court (the origin of this icon.)

Waspi Square.
http://wapsisquare.com/comic/09092001/
It starts off very slow as your standard slice-of-life, gag-a-day comedy before diving into giant plot of demons, golems, and the Mayan calendar. It's based heavily on Latin American mythology, but some other mythos sneak into. Nearly all-female cast, sometimes delves into cheesecake too much, but the plot and characters are engrossing. It's not completed as in it's still going, but the major world-in-the-balance plot was resolved. Updates daily.

The Zombie Hunters.
http://www.thezombiehunters.com/index.php?strip_id=1
A dark but practical take on the zombie apocalypse. Updates once a week with little deviation.

The Quick and Dirty Life of Fritz Fargo
http://fritzfargo.com/2010/11/hot-bat/
The bat-shit crazy adventures of a cocaine user. Kind of scattered updates.

Story of the Door
http://www.storyofthedoor.com/comics/729570/chapter-1-cover/
Beautifully drawn mythology comic. Scattered updates. Bit of hinted gayness.

Goodbye Chains: http://www.goodbyechains.com/index.php?page=467

A Western, starring a shameless thief and a gay communist...

It has humor, but also drama and some violence. It's not always a happy story.

Re: Rec me some webcomics please~

(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Digger (http://www.diggercomic.com/?p=3) is complete, I'd say pretty smart, and totally amazing. The main character is a wombat in a very quirky and creative fantasy world.

Re: Rec me some webcomics please~

(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, I'm going to have to check out some of these recs!

Thirding Gunnerkrigg Court, which I've been a long-time follower of (and it just keeps getting better!), and seconding Unsounded, which I found much more recently (if you like worldbuilding, trawl the Formspring of the latter for some amazingly thought-out backstory!)

(Apologies for the terrible summaries.)

Vattu: Beautiful art, interesting world. Vattu is of the Fluter tribe, and the Sahtan empire invokes flavors of say, the Roman empire (in its consolidation of very different peoples, if nothing else). Overside is very much it's own world though. Also home of the completed Rice Boy and Order of Tales, which take place in the same universe (though with no character overlaps).
http://rice-boy.com/

Todd Allision and the Petunia Violet: (updates a complete chapter a month) Quirky and fun, this comic makes me laugh out loud sometimes. Mystery, sort of.
http://www.mangamagazine.net/manga-and-comics/detail-page/23

Carciphona: Manga-style art. Follows a sorceress living in a time after magic has been banned - and an assassin who specializes in killing mages. The story is bigger than just them, though, involving several kingdoms (and eventual war?) (Check out the artist's gallery for non-canon, but beautiful, pics of the two girls.)

(Anonymous) 2012-06-12 10:32 am (UTC)(link)
Ran out of time earlier, but I have to mention -

Namesake: Takes place in various story worlds. In the the first (and current) arc, which is about to conclude, Emma is trying to figure out a way to get home from Oz (definitely not your typical Dorothy though, heh). Really nice storytelling and effective use of just a few colors.
