(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 12:10 am (UTC)(link)But for a lot of people they just want their villains to just be 'evil' and not have anything surrounding them that could make them feel uncomfortable about rooting for the villains death.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 01:09 am (UTC)(link)I find stuff where the villain's motivations are just... they woke up one day and decided, "OK, today I'ma get my villain on!" for no apparent reason whatsoever, I find it really hard to suspend my disbelief. I like to have some explanation for the villains, even if it's just that they're doing it for the lulz. But just having a character explained away as "they're just evil, OK?" doesn't quite work.
But again, YMMV. I tend to like villains in general, I find it fascinating to dissect their motivations and what makes them tick.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 01:18 am (UTC)(link)Well in my case when I hear "this is why villain acts this way!" it's hard to figure out if that reason means that the person saying it thinks I should feel sorry for them or sympathize with them - which depending on what they've done just feels wrong. Because I feel like if I'm supposed to sympathize with them I'm also supposed to excuse their behavior which nope, not going to happen.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 01:32 am (UTC)(link)That's fair enough. I don't exactly sympathise with them- I just like to know what drives them to do what they do. Even if it's just "because they wanted to see if they could do it," it's a lot more interesting to me than just "OK guys, they're evil. They just are. End of story."
also, may I ask what NA means? I'm still trying to learn standard English, acronyms are taking me some more time. I know what SA and AYRT mean, though.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 01:38 am (UTC)(link)Yeah - I can understand wanting to understand what drives these characters. I think I've been ruined by the more extreme defenders of some of these characters... the ones who honestly seem to believe that it's everyone else's fault the character is the way they are ... so I swing to the other extreme of "THEY'RE EVIL, BECAUSE THEY'RE EVIL!" - which isn't any better really.
