I'm older now, and maybe the black and white morality gets to me a bit, but I love the series enough to not let it bother me too much.

On the good side, don't forget squirrels! XD And actually, it's not 100% that way. There have been a slim few notable exceptions...not so much woodlanders that were bad (though I can think of some that seemed pretty villainous), but vermin who were good! Like Romsca, for example.

Was Romsca in the Outcast of Redwall? It's been a long time but if I remember correctly didn't he poison someone and that's why he was banished from Redwall? In the end he did redeem himself but yea poisoning someone is definitely not a sign of good and everyone in Redwall was pretty much like "He's a ferret, what did you expect". I guess he was kind of a gray character but I'd prefer if there were some genuinely good vermin and evil uhh...non vermin I guess.

Romsca is from Pearls of Lutra. The ferret you're thinking of is Veil. And yes, he tried to poison Friar Bunfold but instead accidentally poisoned Myrtle. As for evil non-vermin, there was the unnamed watervole in Eulalia!, Fenno from Marlfox, and Druwp from Martin the Warrior.

Romsca was in The Pearls Of Lutra. She ended up saving the Abbot's life, though she died. I really loved the character, especially because, though she was good in the end, she wasn't ashamed of how she'd lived her life (as a pirate.)
