This. But I also think it comes from authors trying to do the playful banter thing that does seem to work and not understanding that there is a line between banter and fighting. To me, there always needs to be that playful, "I don't really mean it" layer underneath the comments.

Sometimes people do the slap/kiss thing when they won't admit they are in love. But when things cross the line into nastiness and hurt feelings, and when the nastiness doesn't end after the couple gets together, I start to wonder why they are together or even interested in the first place. LIke, compare Han and Leia from Star Wars where there was that playfulness to Ron and Hermione where they were genuinely nasty to each other and there were hurt feelings on both sides.

To be fair, Han and Leia were adults, Ron and Hermione were kids~teens.

This, plus there was nothing to imply that Ron and Hermione continued to fight into their marriage.

That was only because we got an idealized, cookie-cutter, everyone was paired off into ~oh so happy marriages in that shit stain of an epilogue.

Thiiis. I love playful banter between couples but not when it crosses the line to flat out arguing/fighting. Like, the banter's there, but the couple's always going to be OK. Han and Leia, while they didn't always see eye to eye, always felt playful enough.
