You don't seem like a bad person or anything, but really? Women are people, and female characters should be held to the same standards as male ones. Perhaps female characters don't get as many interesting/necessary roles and plots as the male ones do in some shows, and it's up to you whether that changes how you interpret those characters. But you don't have to like a character just because she's female, and if you're having to try to be positive about them just because they're women... either that show really sucks at writing women and you don't want to look like a sexist, or you're doing your best to overcome a sexism problem you've got. If it's the latter, that's great, keep on keeping on, but if it's the former... you don't have to feel a way you don't feel just to not be a sexist.

Am I the only one slightly creeped out by this?

I don't see it as creepy at all. I've often been frustrated when I don't like female characters, because there are so few in some shows that I want to like and support them. And I feel like so many people hate on female characters that the studios will see that and use as yet another excuse about why the majority of movies and films are all about men.

So I get it. I mean, I know that realistically if I don't like someone I don't like someone and it doesn't matter what gender/race/etc they are and I shouldn't just like them only because of gender/race/etc. However, there's a lot of complexities with things like women or people of color in the media.

Agreed. And I find it particularly difficult on shows that only have a couple women characters. On shows where there's a LOT of women characters (Grey's Anatomy comes to mind, where about half of the very large cast is women) I don't really feel it's a big deal if I dislike one or am ambivalent, but I feel guilty if it's a show that doesn't really have them.

Secret Maker Here

What I meant was that even if I don't particularly like a female character, I don't post negative things about them because I hate the way that some sections of fandom treat female characters and I don't want to be a part of that.

But with Becky, I am just SO tempted to write about the various ways in which she annoys me, but if I did, then I'd be part of the problem with the way that fandom interacts with female character.

And I think that's a valid concern/thought. If we existed in a vacuum of perfect equality then yeah, all people are people and whatever, like the other Anons have said. But you're right that fandom - and the world at large - treats women like shit a lot of the time and jumps at any opportunity to join in some good old bashing. So even if you hate someone you rightfully hesitate to be part of the problem by causing more shit.

From what I've seen in this community, if you don't like women you're a fucking nazi that needs to burn in hell. That's why I've stopped participating for the most part, the word "misogyny" gets thrown around like a 2 dollah whore.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-12 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of people use "misogyny" when they really mean "sexist". There is a difference.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-12 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
So much word. You can still be sexist without hating women.
