it's all about demographics: if the fandom is likelier to have older fans, or fans who aren't new to fandom, the quality of work increases. Not to say that younger/new fans CAN'T be talented, because of course they can, but generally older fans have more practice writing/drawing/etc, especially if they've been in fandoms before. Furthermore they have more life experience in general so they can use that to create more realistic characters and worlds.
Pretty simple, doesn't make you elitist :)
