You and your friend fangirl in different ways. Your way of fangirling is not better than hers, her way is not better than yours. You're going to have to talk about it and compromise or find someone else to fangirl with.

Also, Yaoi is an anime trope/convention that has problematically rigid relationship roles (no room for each couple to set their own roles).

Oh stop, yaoi just means a manga with two guys in it. Stop making your own yaoi meaning.

DA

Yaoi does mean an anime/manga with a primary gay romance, but there IS a structure to it that isn't typical of western slash. One male always has to be dominant and overly 'masculine', one male has to be submissive and 'feminine'; the whole seme/uke dynamic. And that's NOT really how gay men are outside of anime/manga, so yeah, it is strange that OP refers to a ive action, western film as yaoi. Just saying.

Same anon. Oops, for some reason I have Avengers on the brain. Strike out live action; western boy band, not film. :P

Seme/Uke doesn't necessarily have to be there to make it yaoi though. The trope is there in many mangas but sometimes it isn't. The way I see it, yaoi is just anime m/m porn.

And there are difference types of gay men some take roles and some don't. Why would you even compare anime/manga to rl.

I'm pretty sure that (in Japan), their m/m stuff is referred to as BL these days, not yaoi?

Stop making your own yaoi meaning.

But what are your thoughts on yaoi?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-12 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
lol

No u.

Dude, the old 'rigid roles only' version of yaoi went out the fandom window years ago. Most people using the term these days mean something very much like slash, it's just that they likely came to fandom via an anime/manga route and got used to certain words.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-12 08:48 am (UTC)(link)
This. That's been my experience for years now.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-12 11:17 am (UTC)(link)
Not completely. And that's just western fandoms. It's still pretty much the same it's always been in Asia and imho, that person's definition of yaoi as in original anime/manga yaoi works is pretty good. You have to dig quite a lot to find ye olde slash relationship dynamics in r18 yaoi manga

It's only problematic if you can't tell fantasy from reality. Porn tropes survive because they turn people on, not because they're necessarily realistic.
