The chemistry wasn't bad imo, just different and not really what most people wanted. Personally, I think they make excellent bros.

MTE. I went in kind of expecting to ship because, you know, "everyone does", but I came out feeling like they were bros, kind of. Like, I felt like Captain America was the "older brother who could do know wrong and died young in a tragic accident", with Tony as the "younger brother who never could measure up" and Tony's dad as the "parent who always measure the younger brother against the martyred older brother", only then Steve has a chance to come back, and Tony had to interact with this person he had been measured up to his whole life.

I mean, I know that's weird, but that's kind of how I saw it. |D

Wow, I love that idea of their relationship, even though I'd never considered it before.

Thanks! :)

I'm not really sure how I got that specific of a headcanon, but that's all I can see it as now. |D

On the flip side you have Steve who's totally confused about why the "younger brother" is jealous of him, and didn't realize their parents ha martyred him, but is annoyed at the way that he's being treated because he had no idea what was going on, and he was "dead".

You know, I'm starting to think that the relationship between Steve and Tony is the relationship that Loki thinks he had with Thor... I may need to look into this.

This is awesome.

Aww...that's kind of sad. I think it's an interesting thought, though.

Yeah, I guess it is. I mean, I was thinking about the Tony & Steve brotherly parallels after I first saw the movie, but then yesterday somebody posted a comment that said

"But I think the kind of fic that pisses me off the most are those ubiquitous Loki/Tony fics where Tony ~understands~ Loki or some bullshit and sympathizes with him and sides with him. Like, what? The entire point of the whole Loki/Tony comparison in the movie is that Tony's very existence completely and utterly undermines every bullshit excuse Loki throws out. Tony's incredibly similar to Loki in personality (the whole arrogant egotistical diva thing), and he had an actual emotionally abusive father and actual horrible traumatic experiences and was actually betrayed by a father-figure he loved and trusted all his life -- far worse than the completely made-up slights Loki claims to have suffered -- and yet Tony's helping people and taking down bad guys and trying save the world instead of whining about how his life sucks and trying to rule everyone. Seriously. The entire Loki/Tony dynamic can be summed up as: Tony knows a lot more about Loki's supposed "problems" than Loki does, and he thinks Loki is full of shit. And somehow that gets flipped completely ass-backwards into "omg Tony's the only one who understaaaaannnnds him!!!""

And I couldn't stop thinking about that...

omg a comment of mine got quoted! I am so ridiculously giddy and flattered :D

[personal profile] loracarol 2012-06-12 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Yep! I liked it.

And I thought I had that it was your quote at the end, only I just realized that I didn't, I'm sorry!

[personal profile] agnes_bean 2012-06-12 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, I never got around to commenting on it yesterday, but that comment was so, so good. I'd never really thought about the comparison between Loki and Tony (I'm in this fandom for Bruce and Science Bros, so I don't think about Loki very much), but everything you said makes perfect sense.

[identity profile] intrigueing.livejournal.com 2012-06-12 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
Lol thanks, I was honestly just venting -- I've seen so many of those cookie cutter fics with those nonsensical assumptions on AO3 that I had to stop myself from comment-trolling them all with "BUT WHYYYYYY???":P

Wow, I love that comment. I think it's very insightful!

Yep! That would be from intrigueing, who I thought I said it was from, but I guess I didn't. Sorry! /selffail

[personal profile] elaminator 2012-06-12 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, there was definitely some of that. After all there was that line with Tony saying he didn't understand what his father saw in Cap, and it seemed pretty obvious there was at least a little resentment because of his dads apparent respect for Steve. (Which he of course felt was so lacking in his own life.)

So once Tony moves past his issues with that (and all his other issues, like wanting to be the center of attention and Cap being the leader and taking some of that away from him) I imagine they'll grow into a more comfortable friendship.
loracarol: (Sousuke sans shirt)

[personal profile] loracarol 2012-06-12 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah, I definitely got some resentment, I was just surprised, rereading my comment, at how detailed my headcanon was. |D

I think so, but I'm not sure if it will ever be "friends" friendly, you know? Like, I can't see them as ever being as friendly as Bruce and Tony, not really, but I can see them settling into a kind of annoying little brother/long-suffering-but-secretly-okay-with-it older brother dynamic, which I don't personally ship. ^^;
elaminator: (Avengers: Tony)

[personal profile] elaminator 2012-06-12 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, well I can see their relationship going several ways, and I don't think TPTB mind changing up their dynamic in the long run either, so...there are lots of possibilities. But (again, with my very limited knowledge of their comic book counterparts) I think the core of their friendship from the comics will stay, which seems to be respect and affection even in the face of disagreement. I can see them arguing a lot but at the end of the day still being friends and supporting each other. Beyond that...IDK.
loracarol: (Happy Zuko)

[personal profile] loracarol 2012-06-12 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah, but I guess I just have been comparing Steve & Tony to Tony and Bruce the whole time, and seeings how good of friends Tony and Bruce were after the same period of time, I can't see Tony and Steve being that kind of good friend, you know? But the arguing a lot, but still being friends and supportive... That I can see.
elaminator: (Assassin's Creed 3: Connor Kenway)

[personal profile] elaminator 2012-06-12 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think how you first feel about someone is a fair assessment of how you'll always feel about them or how well that relationship will go in the future. Tony and Steve knew very little about each other and had a lot of misconceptions about who each other were, and that colored their interaction. Now that they're understanding each other a bit better and some of the resentment and pressure is gone, I think it's only natural their friendship will grow, and be (to some extent) different. Not necessarily saying they have to be bff's forever or anything, because again, this is an AU, but I don't think it's impossible either. Tony and Bruce connected largely because of their interests (and Tony's support in general), but that doesn't mean that Tony and Steve can't find something in each other to value or that even if their friendship is different than Tony & Bruce's it will automatically be less. But...that's me. Different strokes and all that.
loracarol: (RuroKen)

[personal profile] loracarol 2012-06-12 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
That's true. :)

[identity profile] intrigueing.livejournal.com 2012-06-12 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I can totally see them being friends, mainly becauses 1) we only got to see them interact over the space of a day or two -- hardly enough to measure a friendship's potential and 2) their main misgivings about each other (Cap's just some fancy guy pumped full of steroids, Tony's just a grandstanding rich boy who doesn't care about anything) were totally blown up by the events of the movie. So I can totally picture them being close friends, but I bet there'll always be a bit of bickering/teasing/long-suffering sighing going on between them ;)
loracarol: (Sousuke all glasses cool)

[personal profile] loracarol 2012-06-12 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
That's a good point. |D

I guess I just can't see movie!Tony and movie!Steve being as good of friends as movie!Tony and movie!Bruce who got to be really good friends (IMO) over the same amount of time, you know?

[identity profile] intrigueing.livejournal.com 2012-06-12 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, I can't imagine Steve and Tony holed up and geeking out together like Tony and Bruce. I'd expect more of Tony dragging Steve around to try and teach him "cool" modern stuff and then the two of them bantering and snarking and rolling their eyes at each other a lot.
loracarol: (Rothbart)

[personal profile] loracarol 2012-06-12 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
I could kind of see that? Though I see more of Thor and Cap and Black Widow running around and doing the "modern days" kind of thing, I could totally see Tony trying to drag them around, with Pepper trying to run interference, lol.
